Eastern Oregon University history
Eastern Oregon University company history timeline
Eastern Oregon University was founded in 1929 as a teacher’s college and today serves as a center for education, culture, and scholarship in rural areas of Oregon.
The original campus plan called for the construction of several more buildings, but the onset of the Great Depression in the fall of 1929 forced the state to limit construction to the building shown in the photograph above, today known as Inlow Hall.
Construction of the main building, designed by Portland architect John V. Bennes, was finished in 1929.
EOU opened its doors in 1929 as Eastern Oregon Normal School, a teacher training school.
In 1939, the Oregon Legislature changed the name to Eastern Oregon College of Education.
In 1956, the Eastern Oregon Normal School was renamed the Eastern Oregon College of Education.
The 1973 Legislature changed EOC's name to Eastern Oregon State College.
In 2000, United States News & World Report ranked the institution among the top four public liberal arts colleges in the West.
In 2013 the Oregon University System began the process of creating independent boards for certain schools, including Oregon State and the University of Oregon.
EOU renewed its wrestling team in 2017 after an extended hiatus, and the Mountaineers boast 13 varsity teams competing in the blue and gold.
