Eastern Virginia Medical School company history timeline

1973

In 1973, Eastern Virginia Medical School accepted its first class.

2011

September 2011: EVMS completes an $80 million construction and renovation project with the opening of its new Education and Research Building, which enables increased enrollment throughout the school's education programs and expansion of key programs, such as cancer research and simulation.

2012

February 2012: Doctor Richard Homan is installed as Provost and Dean.

June 2012: Businesswoman Anne Shumadine is elected as the institution's first female rector of the Board of Visitors.

However, on July 25, 2012, EVMS made a joint announcement with The College of William & Mary that the two schools are considering merging so that EVMS would become the William & Mary School of Medicine.

November 2012: Thanks to a $3 million gift from philanthropists Joan and Macon Brock, the M. Foscue Brock Institute for Community and Global Health is established.

2013

On January 10, 2013, it was announced that Harry Lester was to step down as president and would be succeeded by the school's dean and provost, Richard V. Homan, MD effective April 15, 2013.

November 2013: EVMS signs its first international affiliation agreement.

2016

February 2016: Doctor Jerry Nadler is the third EVMS faculty member to be honored as Virginia Scientist of the Year.
