1977

1977: James Kim opens an electronics store in suburban Philadelphia.

1980

In 1980, he relinquished his posts as president and chief executive officer of Amkor so he could spend more time overseeing the development of both his companies, limiting his role to developing long-term plans for both Amkor and Electronics Boutique.

1984

Although it would take several years for Griffiths to distinguish himself and earn promotions to more senior positions, the company had its 21st-century management team in place by 1984.

1985

1985: After several years of experimenting with merchandise, Electronics Boutique focuses on computer software.

1993

By 1993, there were 318 stores in operation, seven of which were international units.

1995

In 1995, the company expanded to the UK with the purchase of 25% of the financially troubled British game retailer Rhino Group.

1997

Electronics Boutique commenced operations in Australia in 1997 and rapidly became the number one video game specialty retailer in the country and the only one with a nationwide footprint.

1998

The IPO was completed in July 1998, ushering in a period of expansion that eventually allowed Electronics Boutique to claim it was the largest of its kind in the world.

2000

In May 2000, in order to unify their company, Electronics Boutique changed the vast majority of its current EB and EB Gameworld stores to the name EB Games.

In 2000, the company attempted to acquire FuncoLand, a 400-store specialty retailer, but another competitor, Babbage's, a video-game retail chain owned by Barnes & Noble Inc., offered a higher price for the FuncoLand chain, benefiting from the considerable financial resources of its parent company.

2001

As of July 30, 2001, the company operated 2,280 stores in the United States (including Puerto Rico), Canada, United Kingdom, Australia, Austria, Denmark, Finland, Germany, Italy, New Zealand, Norway, Spain, and Sweden, primarily under the names EB Games and Electronics Boutique.

2001: Griffiths replaces Firestone as chief executive officer.

2002

2002: Electronics Boutique divests its sports and kids divisions.

2005

At the end of May 2005, he bolstered the company's European operations by preparing to enter Spain for the first time.

On May 23, 2005, EB Games announced a definitive agreement to acquire Jump, a retailer based in Valencia, Spain that sells PCs and other consumer electronics.

On Thursday, October 6, 2005 shareholders from EB Games and GameStop agreed to a $1.44 billion takeover deal.

2008

The Canadian division was the largest of the international divisions with over 300 stores as of May of 2008.

2021

Stores began to be converted to GameStop signage by September 2021.
