Stephen A. Matthews Ph.D.Stephen A. Matthews Ph.D. LinkedIn profile

Liberal Arts Professor of Sociology, Anthropology, Demography and Geography Director, Graduate Program in Demography Faculty Director, Graduate Programs in Applied Demography Editor, Spatial Demography Associate Editor, Mathematical Population Studies, Pennsylvania State University

Our program is too broad and complex to answer this in any meaningful way (see my opening paragraph). I hope our Ph.D. graduates have both soft skills (e.g., people skills, communication (writing/speaking), team science/work skills, critical thinking skills) as well as the technical skills (e.g., data analysis, data visualization, data ethics, IRB experience, etc.). As mentioned, I also hope they are flexible and adaptive vis-a-vis other perspectives (interdisciplinary outlook).

What soft skills should all economic research analysts possess?

Dr. Alex Lebedinsky

Chair and Professor, Western Kentucky University

Ability to convey complex ideas to general audiences. Ability to boil down complicated questions into a few simple statements. Ability to write well. Presentation skills.

What hard/technical skills are most important for economic research analysts?

Dr. Alex Lebedinsky

Chair and Professor, Western Kentucky University

Econometrics, data skills (importing data into whatever software you will use for analysis, combining multiple datasets, clean data). Software: R, Stata, SAS (less popular but still widely used). Python is good too. Basic SQL could be helpful. Excel still rules in many places, so you should know that well too.

What economic research analyst skills would you recommend for someone trying to advance their career?

Wendy Stock Ph.D.Wendy Stock Ph.D. LinkedIn profile

Professor of Economics, Associate Editor, Journal of Economic Education, Co-Director, MSU Initiative for Regulation and Applied Economic Analysis, Montana State University

I would recommend gaining job experience and additional training during a gap year. Skills and practice in data analysis, coding, and writing will help both on the job and if/when students return to campus.

What type of skills will young economic research analysts need?

Christopher WooldridgeChristopher Wooldridge LinkedIn profile

Director, Murray State University

In the surveys we have completed, there are some general reoccurring themes 1) pass a drug test, 2) show up on time, 3) be able to communicate (speak and write), 4) be able to think critically, and 5) tell the truth. In addition to those, the education and experience level of graduates is very important. This field continues to grow, and the competition for these positions will become more intense.

Those that can gain experience through internships and other experiential learning opportunities, while also working on an academic credentials, will have a head start for entry into this field. Both of those were considerations when Murray State University established the Masters in Economic Development as well as a certificate in ED to provide that credentialing for students in the region and beyond.

What technical skills for an economic research analyst stand out to employers?

Huanan Xu Ph.D.Huanan Xu Ph.D. LinkedIn profile

Assistant Professor, Indiana University South Bend

The ability to gather effective data. Being able to create table or chart full of numbers doesn't mean collecting or presenting effective information. During this era of information being "more than enough", employers would appreciate the skills of digging useful information rather than a simple translating of the existing information.
The ability to interpret data. This is more demanding than the first point. The first point is to show the descriptive information of data while the second point requires stronger statistical and econometric skills to interpret data in a meaningful way. For example, conduct hypothesis test, build casual relationships, etc. This is also what we are emphasizing in our economics program to teach students data analytical skills and data processing skills.
