Edinburg Regional Medical Center company history timeline

1908

In 1908 a small town, known as Chapin was selected as the new county seat.

1909

During the making of present day Edinburg, the County Jail was built in 1909 shortly after being named County Seat.

1911

The settlement of Chapin was named after County Judge Dennis B. Chapin, but in 1911 was renamed Edinburg.

1918

In 1918, Doctor Frank Osborn built a pharmacy and medical offices in McAllen.

1920

McAllen's first Latino doctor, Doctor Carlos Balli, opened a practice in 1920.

1923

Doctor Osborn and others began a movement in 1923 to establish the first municipal hospital in McAllen.

1925

McAllen Municipal Hospital opened in January 1925 with facilities for the care of 25 patients.

1926

The Ebony Hills Country Club was built in 1926 to accommodate the needs of the affluent citizens of Edinburg.

1927

The Edinburg Southern Pacific Depot operated out of a rail car until the depot opened its doors on August 1, 1927.

In 1927, Grandview Hospital was built in Edinburg.

1928

McAllen General Hospital was completed in 1928.

1929

The Edinburg College graduated its first class in 1929.

1932

In 1932 the Chamber was officially chartered.

1960

The 1960 expansion included a newborn nursery with 36 bassinets, bringing the total number of patient beds to 200.

1968

Grandview Hospital served the community until 1968 when Edinburg General Hospital was constructed on 333 W. Freddy Gonzalez Drive.

1985

The successor to the municipal hospitals came in late 1985 with the opening of the six-story McAllen Medical Center, which still operates today in the original building.

1993

The hospital building that stood for decades and had been renamed multiple times was finally demolished in 1993 to make room for the new McAllen City Hall.

1994

The hospital operated as a governmental, non profit, Hospital Authority until it was sold to Universal Health Services, Inc. in November 1994.

1996

McAllen Heart Hospital opened on January 15, 1996 as a specialty care facility dedicated to the diagnosis and treatment of heart disease.

2005

Cornerstone Regional Hospital, co-owned by physician investors, became part of South Texas Health System in 2005.

2006

In March 2006, Edinburg Children's Hospital was added to the campus as the first freestanding children's hospital in the Rio Grande Valley.
