In 1811 the National Society for Promoting the Education of the Poor in the Principle of the Established Church (The Church of England) was formed.

1814

In 1814 non-conformists (Protestants who did not belong to the Church of England) formed the British and Foreign Schools Society.

1817

He opened the Hartford School for the Deaf in Connecticut in 1817.

1821

After society embraced this new philosophy, the first public school in the United States was established in 1821.

1823

In 1823, Reverend Samuel Read Hall founded the first private normal school in the United States, the Columbian School in Concord, Vermont.

1830

Switzerland was among the first European countries to establish free, compulsory primary education in 1830.

1838

At the beginning of the 19th century, a man named Joseph Lancaster (1778-1838) invented a new method of educating the working class.

1839

The first public normal school in the United States was founded shortly thereafter in 1839 in Lexington, Massachusetts.

In 1867, education in the United States received a major boost: The Department of Education was established, George Peabody donated 2 million dollars to help public education in the south, and Howard University for African American students was established.

McDonnell (1987), studying perceptions and attitudes of parents about integrated educational placements for their children, found that parents with children in a segregated setting predicted that an integrated environment would be a negative experience.

By 1990, multiple computers could be found in classrooms nationwide.

1998

However, student grants were ended in 1998, and from then on most students had to take loans.

2008

In the coming years, there will be a greater need to collaborate on free content development and sharing resources (2008). The open university of the twenty-first century will adopt and adapt existing content rather than create it.
