Overview
This position is part of core staffing for the Trauma Nurses Talk Tough program and is specifically responsible for the Senior falls injury prevention program and grant management for the Trauma Program. Injury prevention, including a senior falls program, is a requirement for Level 1 Trauma Verification.
Coordinates and provides nursing education and training for the Legacy Emanuel Trauma program including, but not limited to, providing age appropriate education to children, adolescents and adults on a variety of topics related to traumatic injury and prevention. Provides trauma education and training to nurses, EMS providers and other health care professionals. Performs and assists with injury prevention research as requested or required. Develops relationships with other agencies and organizations with the goal of enhancing the health status of those in the community.
Responsible for recruitment, coordination of training, ongoing communication and evaluation of instructors and department support staff. Develops and implements annual calendar of classes. Participates in program planning and evaluation. Develops new venues and curricula for trauma education based on evidence-based nursing practice. Reviews, evaluates and approves class materials. Facilitates the educational process, including resolution of operating issues. Provides input to and monitoring of budget, including and maintains compliance with Legacy policies.
Responsibilities
GENERAL ACCOUNTABILITIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
PROGRAM OPERATIONS :
Assists in the development and coordinates the process for scheduling and implementing trauma prevention education to health care providers and the community.
Develops relationships with other agencies and organizations with the goal of enhancing the health status of those in the community.
Maintains effective database of instructors, including preparation, areas of interest and expertise, and availability; and maintaining lines of communication with other trauma education coordinators.
Develops and implements an annual calendar of classes and training for trauma prevention and health care provider education as assigned. Responsible for appropriate communications with instructors, hospital site schedulers and catering services, and other support services. Ensures that the schedule is published, updated and distributed to appropriate departments and the community.
Provides ongoing problem solving and conflict resolution support to instructors, trauma support staff and hospital departments.
Provides input into the development of the annual budget for Trauma Nurses Talk Tough; monitors operating budget. Ensures compliance with Legacy policies.
Monitors compliance with all contracts and grants including provision of data to fulfill grant reporting requirements on a timely basis.
Maintains efficient program operations through effective distribution of supplies and materials; regular review and updating of forms and materials; and knowledge of and adherence to appropriate policies.
COORDINATION OF INSTRUCTOR STAFF :
Facilitates effective communication, training and education of patients, healthcare providers and the community by staff instructors.
Acts as primary point of communication with instructors and community partners. Facilitates communication between instructors, support staff, community partners and the Trauma Program Manager.
Obtains input from instructors and others regarding staff development and educational opportunities. Provides nursing education and training to instructors based on evidence -based nursing practice.
Gathers and summarizes input for ongoing and annual performance reviews of instructors and support staff, and reviews with manager.
Develops and implements an orientation process for new instructors and support staff, including provision of education on the kinematics of injury and class specific elements. Incorporates new ideas for training programs as appropriate.
PLANNING AND PROGRAM DEVELOPMENT :
Participates in ongoing efforts to evaluate patient and community needs and provide effective education. Represents Legacy and Legacy Emanuel Trauma Program within the community.
Maintains knowledge base regarding standards for educational approaches, principles of adult teaching, and national trends; provides input for annual operating plans.
Participates effectively in program planning and development as assigned. Periodically evaluates educational programs and materials for currency and effectiveness. Responsible for the development and review of class materials. Assists in update of the TNTT curricula package. Assists in identifying national benchmarks and best practices to be used in developing new and innovative approaches.
Supports trauma care through the provision of patient education on trauma injury and prevention including, but not limited to, patient screening and brief alcohol intervention education and risk behavior education as requested or required.
Reviews information on client satisfaction and class effectiveness; develops other quality initiatives as appropriate.
ROLE DEVELOPMENT AND ADVOCACY :
Maintains and utilizes knowledge base in kinematics and trauma prevention and education.
Works collaboratively with health care providers and educators to advocate for and facilitate optimal health through education.
Participates in direct teaching as required; observes or designates a trained educator to observe all instructors during orientation and on a regular basis for evaluation purposes.
Provides information to others that promotes understanding and support of trauma prevention education.
Represents Legacy Health System, Emanuel Medical Center and Emanuel Level I Trauma Center in local, state and national venues.
Demonstrates ability to work effectively in a team- oriented environment; in a manner that utilizes flexibility in scheduling, work hours, and approach.
Demonstrates commitment and sensitivity in working with culturally diverse populations.
Qualifications
Education:
Academic degree in nursing (BSN or MSN/MN) required; MSN/MN preferred. Internal candidates may be considered with verification of a BSN or MSN/MN in progress, to be completed prior to 12/31/2023.
Experience:
Two years of experience in trauma nursing. Experience in trauma prevention and education preferred.
