Edward Waters University company history timeline
Construction of the first building began in October 1872 on ten acres of land in Live Oak.
The origins of the college can be traced back to 1872, when two reverends – Charles H. Pearce and William G. Steward – established the Brown Theological Institute in Live Oak with the aid of the African Methodist Episcopal Church.
The school only lasted a couple of years before shutting down in part due to funding issues, but it would be re-established in 1883 by Reverend W.W. Simpson in downtown Jacksonville.
Struggling with some financial difficulties, the school closed for much of the 1870s. It reopened in 1883 as "East Florida Conference High School”, then changed to “East Florida Scientific and Divinity High School.” Over the next ten years, the curriculum was expanded.
He was born on April 15, 1889, in Crescent City, Florida, to an ordained minister in the African Methodist Episcopal (AME) church, the Rev.
In 1892, the school was renamed for Edward Waters, the third bishop of the AME Church.
A drawing of 1893 shows that the College President at that time was John R. Scott, Sr., first pastor of the St Paul African Methodist Episcopal Church of Jacksonville, and a former member of the Florida Legislature.
The college was destroyed in Great (Jacksonville) Fire of 1901, the largest urban fire in southeast United States.
Its modern campus was constructed, beginning in 1904, along Kings Road just north of the New Town neighborhood.
Three years later in 1904 the AME church began rebuilding the college.
By 1904 the college obtained new land and work was started on the new facility.

Beginning in 1979 the school was accredited as a four-year institution by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and started awarding bachelor's degrees.
Her Tiger spirit shines through the ups and the downs, like when EWC was placed on probation in 2004 during a plagiarism scandal.
EWC graduate and former football star Nat Glover took the job as interim president in 2010 and for seven years he worked to raise the bar.

In April 2018, the Board selected Doctor A. Zachary Faison, Jr.as the 30th President and CEO. At age 37, Faison’s appointment made him the nation’s youngest sitting president and CEO of an HBCU.
