Since 1965, EF has helped millions of students study and travel abroad in its mission to break down barriers of language, cultural, and geography that divide us.
In 1965, he decided to start a small company called Europeiska Ferieskolan (European Holiday School – EF for short) that combined language learning with travel abroad.
Though hard to imagine today, traveling abroad to learn English was a radical concept in 1965.
EF English First has been a notable force in education and development since 1965 with schools and offices in major cities in China and Indonesia.
West Germany followed in 1969 and Japan three years later, just before the Japanese government decided to adopt the Western keyboard, making English its official computer language.
In 1993, he was a founding member of the Geneva based Mentor Foundation, “an independent, non-governmental, not for profit, apolitical organization” focused on supporting research and initiatives in drug prevention.
Over the next 30 years, EF continued to expand globally and in 1997, EF opened a local English language training center branch in Shanghai, China.
In 1997, when the company entered China, Hult gave Rännefors simple instructions for finding the right spots for schools. “He told me not to spend too much time thinking about it.
Starting in 2003, the Bertil Hult Prize has been given to a Swedish school once every year, based on their support for dyslexia education.
In 2006, Bertil was elected "International Swede of the Year."
There are also two major Chinese players, New Oriental and TAL. TAL, founded by Zhang Bangxin in 2007, operates more than 590 schools and in mid-August had a market capitalization of $17.5 billion.
Bertil Hult carries the Olympic Torch, China, 2008
