Ehs specialist job description

Under general supervision, performs generally non-routine risk assessments for processes and new equipment. Submits corrective solutions to risks while also making fiscal and operational considerations. Assists in safety and quality activities and improvement projects as directed by manager. Informs managers and supervisors of regulatory changes with which the company must comply.
Key Responsibilities
Ensures that safety and environmental rules and regulations are followed.Advises managers regarding safety, compliance and environmental issues.Implements compliance requirements and control procedures as prescribed by regulatory agencies.Performs safety orientation and conducts training updates for employees.Completes reports required by regulatory agencies and maintains environmental records.Implements safety and environmental programs in conjunction with corporate initiatives.May train employees on safety aspects of machine operations.Maintains system processes that support the safety and environmental function.May be responsible for quality processes.Incorporates and maintains safety observances, including but not limited to, use of all PPE by employees, ensuring guards and safety features are working, and promoting good safety practices and habits.May be responsible for regulatory water testing and reporting.May support site trails for process optimization and improvements.May conduct field sampling safely from various sampling points in and around Greif location(s).May perform customer service, purchasing, scheduling or other duties as required.Performs other duties as assigned.
Education and Experience
High School Graduate or equivalent. Bachelor's degree preferred.3 years experience in industrial or plant facility. Over 4+ years experience preferred.

Knowledge and Skills
Solid knowledge of relevant safety regulations.Ability to identify unsafe work practices and/or able to recognize processes subject to safety/environmental regulations.Takes an analytical approach to complex issues and problem solving.Ability to train and coach colleagues on issues relating to EH&S.Solid interpersonal and communication skills.Proficient in Microsoft Office suite of software and Internet research.

With a minimal direction, coordinates the necessary programs, reports, training, audits, and systems in order to comply with all environmental and safety laws and regulations.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities

* Monitor all waste activities such as generation, storage, inventory, transportation, and disposal.
* Train and/or coordinate training for all plant personnel on environmental, hygiene and safety matters, such as forklift equipment, hazardous material, communication program, emergency plant evacuation, audits, emergency response, electrical safety, etc.
* Investigate accidents related to personal injury, fire chemical release, illness, and toxic exposure due to industrial activity in the facility in order to detect and enforce recommendation to avoid occurrences.
* Prepare all environmental reports to the appropriate government agencies in accordance with the laws and regulations.
* Perform investigations and studies in order to improve the effectiveness and reduce the use of chemicals in the facility and the generation of wastes.
* Develop, evaluate, and/or purchase equipment in order to comply with environmental, hygiene, and safety laws.
* Perform hygiene studies, such as noise survey, heat stress, air monitoring, waste sampling, etc. in order to provide employees a safe working environment.
* Perform environmental and safety audits in order to assess compliance to environmental and safety laws and regulations.
* Maintain and file environmental, hygiene, and safety documents as per internal policies and procedures and environmental and safety laws and regulations.
* Evaluate MSDS's and approve or disapprove the use of new and existing chemicals in the facility.
* Keep management informed of all new and revised environmental, hygiene and safety laws and regulations.
* Determine and recommend the appropriate personnel protection clothing and equipment to safeguard the employees from potential hazards.
* Determine accident prevention methods and provide the necessary training to all employees to comply with OSHA requirements.
* Take appropriate measures to establish control of hazardous conditions on working environment and maintain proper documentation of corrective action taken.
* Detect and report improper operation, faulty equipment, unsafe guarding and unusual condition to the proper supervisor.
* Coordinate with vendors on plant physical security and perform periodic reviews of security systems/procedures.
* Manage vendors providing facilities services such as grounds maintenance, snow removal, etc.

Job Dimensions

* Site EHS leader responsible for ensuring compliance with all applicable local, state, federal and company regulatory standards and policies related to environment and industrial safety
* Leads activities related to company environmental and industrial safety program requirements
* Activities
* Actively leads and manages EHS programs such as training, incident management, waste management & minimization, work permits, internal audit corrective action management, etc. for specific location.
* Build and promote a strong safety culture throughout the facility
* Develops and implements detailed, task level, day to day EHS practices and work instructions in accordance with Bostik requirements
* Leads/participates on incident investigation teams consistent with the level of EHS expertise needed
* Participates on and coaches site management teams with regard to EHS challenges/activities
* Interfaces with regulatory agencies, as needed, on compliance and/or enforcement issues
* Ensures Bostik facility security and travel security requirements are understood and followed
* Acts as an EHS technical resource for EHS information related to capital project reviews
* Participates on process hazard analyses (PHA) teams and other process safety activities
* Work with regional EHS staff to provide monthly reporting on a wide range of metrics for EHS topics

* Must be capable of effectively communicating technical details in management meetings, plant meetings, and in training sessions.
* Ability to identify, assess, prioritize, and manage risk appropriately.
* Must be capable of technical interaction with senior level management
* Must be able to prioritize and manage multiple and sometimes changing priorities
* Must be capable of occasional company required travel

* Educate, foster and support organizational commitment to EHS performance including safety culture
* Actively identify, communicate and implement improvement needs and initiatives in EHS
* Effectively respond to company KPI shortcomings and corrective action plans
* Act as onsite EHS technical expert for assigned location

Qualifications / Experience Required

* Associates Degree in occupation safety, environmental sciences or related discipline and 2+ Years of experience in EHS role in chemical industry
* OR Bachelor's Degree in occupational safety, environmental sciences or other related discipline(s) and demonstrated EH&S leadership responsibilities in chemical R&D laboratory.
* Strong communication & leadership skills
* Must be capable of effective conflict resolution
* Demonstrated & effective skills associated with report writing, database use, web-based tools, spreadsheet creation, etc.
