The EKG Technician o perates electrocardiograph (EKG) machines to record electromotive variations of patients' heart muscle in order to provide data to the appropriate personnel in the diagnosis and treatment of heart ailments. Gathers pertinent patient data and explains test procedures to patients. Records and processes the 12 lead electrocardiograms (EKG) and signal average EKGs. Reports significant abnormal events appearing on the EKG to the appropriate personnel.
• Requires high school graduate or equivalent.
• Successful completion of courses in medical terminology; EKG; rhythm interpretation; anatomy physiology; or other related courses preferred.
• Requires Basic Life Support certification through the AHA. Other advanced life support certifications may be required per unit/department specialty according to patient care policies.
• Knowledge and familiarity with EKG equipment; computers; and related medical terminology preferred.
• Basic knowledge of anatomy and physiology preferred.
• Knowledge of IV-Phlebotomy preferred, but not required.
• Requires alertness to details in administering and processing EKGs in order to assure proper quality; accuracy; and timeliness.
