Job Summary
The Machine Tool Electrician is responsible for planning, leading, and executing electrical installation and wiring activities for machine tool builds. This role includes technical leadership, hands-on electrical work, and coordination across design, manufacturing, and purchasing teams to ensure builds meet customer specifications, quality standards, and delivery schedules.
Key Responsibilities
Electrical & Technical Work
Plan and execute wiring and installation of electrical equipment and fixtures
Inspect wiring and installations for compliance with company and customer specifications
Interpret electrical schematics, layouts, blueprints, and job orders
Ensure proper power availability (power drops, bus capacity, transformers, voltage requirements)
Support debug activities and startup as needed
Leadership & Coordination
Plan, assign, and direct work activities for assigned electrical tasks
Estimate labor hours and material requirements for job assignments
Analyze and resolve technical and workflow issues
Coordinate with Design, Purchasing, Follow‑Up, and Manufacturing teams
Confer with other leaders to align departmental activities
Quality, Safety & Compliance
Interpret and enforce company policies and safety regulations
Ensure compliance with customer specifications, OSHA, and Ontario Hydro requirements
Adhere to quality system standards and participate in continuous improvement initiatives
Identify and report safety and environmental concerns

Maintain time, build, and percentage‑complete records

Mark up layouts, collect cable lengths, and document electrical changes
Ensure drawing updates are communicated back to Controls Design
Process Improvement
Recommend improvements to build methods, equipment performance, and product quality

Support standard guidelines for preliminary wiring activities performed in-house
Qualifications
Strong experience in machine tool or industrial electrical systems
Proven ability to lead electrical build activities and troubleshoot complex issues

GENERAL SUMMARY:
Under direction, is responsible for proper operation of the electro-mechanical, electrical and electronic devises associated with road construction; installs, maintains, repairs, erects and lays out all devices, and associated equipment including poles, overhead / underground installations related to the operations of the electrical department; acts as field supervisor of various projects.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Installs, services and maintains traffic signals.
Installs, modifies and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, apparatuses and control equipment.
Modifies electrical installations to minimize waste of materials, provides access for future maintenance, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes.
Follows diagrams and/or blueprints, insuring that concealed wiring is installed before completion of future walls, ceilings and flooring.
Makes standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment.
Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, pulls and installs electrical conduit.
Splices wires by stripping insulation from terminal leads, twisting or soldering wires together and applying tape or terminal caps.
Connects wiring to lighting fixtures and power equipment.
Installs control and distribution apparatuses such as switches, relays and circuit-breaker panels.
Connects power cables to equipment and installs grounding leads.
Tests continuity of circuit to insure electrical compatibility and safety of components.
Maintains emergency generators, lift stations and other electrical equipment and systems.
Makes routine inspections of installed equipment and/or systems to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation or replacement.
Performs emergency service and preventative maintenance on all electrical equipment and systems.
Operates and drives various truck mounted aerial lift devices.
Erects scaffolding or sets up ladders necessary for performing tasks above ground level.
Operates a snow plow truck with underbody blade, front plow and salt spreader insert for winter maintenance.
Required to participate in call rotation as assigned by the Electrical Supervisor.
Required to participate in random drug and alcohol screens.
Performs related duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required Education and Experience:
Possession of a high school diploma or a certificate of successful completion of the General Educational Development Test (GED)
A minimum of four (4) years electrical experience
Preferred Education and Experience:
Traffic signal experience
Required Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a current Michigan Commercial Driver's License and appropriate endorsements (Class A or B with air brake endorsement) within one (1) year of hire date **
Possession of a valid Michigan driver's license and an operable insured automobile for authorized travel
Journeyman Electrician License
Preferred Licenses or Certifications:
Possession of a current Michigan Commercial Driver's License and appropriate endorsements (Class A or B with air brake endorsement)
100 Foot Pole Certification
**It will be the employees responsibility to obtain their CDL Permit, pass a DOT physical, receive their DOT medical card and complete the Entry Level Driver Training Program at their expense prior to the Department of Roads paying for the CDL B driving course.
