The Electrical Systems Engineer serves as the subject matter expert of all Material Handling Equipment (MHE) within the Distribution Center (DC). Primary function is to ensure high availability, up-time and performance of the system. Through preventive and predictive maintenance processes, the candidate will efficiently and effectively troubleshoot equipment breakdowns, and quickly restore equipment to service to support the operations teams. They will work with Facilities, Operations, IT, Planning, and Engineering partners to optimize performance and freight flow of MHE.

This role provides an escalated support resource during downtime events, ensuring proper training and processes are developed utilizing root cause analysis post incidents. As the subject matter expert, will be critical to maintain a level of expertise around all electrical, mechanical/control system communication for MHE systems onsite, including, but not limited to conveyor systems, sortation equipment, robotics and shuttle systems (Storage and Retrieval). Diagnostic tools and software will be utilized to collect and analyze data to identify trends and recommend improvements to the building MHE.
This role will conduct technical interviews for internal and external technician candidates, evaluate technical skills and abilities, and train and coach internal technicians. They will support training plan development and progress follow up. They will impart expert knowledge through training site technicians on appropriate safety procedures, use of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) while maintaining equipment (Lock Out/Tag Out, Arc Flash, etc.), and maintaining a safe work environment by eliminating potential equipment safety hazards.
The candidate will be self-motivated, able to inspect, maintain, troubleshoot, repair, train, and coach across various resources and scenarios. Strong ability to multitask and work well under pressure.

What you'll Bring (Basic Qualifications)
* Must be enrolled full-time in an undergraduate or undergraduate degree program in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems, Power Electronics, or Power automation/control
* Must maintain a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA (without rounding)

The pay for this position ranges from $21.00/hr - $36.00/hr based on years of undergraduate/graduate field of study completed.
This position is also eligible for:
Relocation Assistance: Co-op/Interns will be reimbursed for reasonable, proper, and documented expenditures incurred while initially reporting to work and returning to school/home upon completion of the assignment. Employees with a permanent address greater than 50 miles away from the work location are eligible.
Housing Allowance: Co-op/Interns employees receive a weekly housing allowance to help off-set living expenses when the co-op/Intern's permanent residence is at least 50 miles away from the work location.

The Chicago office of SmithGroup is looking for a Electrical Engineering Intern to join our team.
Working with us, you will:
Work on integrated architecture and engineering project design teams.
Perform analysis, design, and documentation of building electrical systems including power distribution, lighting, and fire alarm systems.
Help perform system assessments and prepare technical reports.
Participate in design meetings.
Receive mentorship from experienced engineers.
Visit a construction site(s) and/or completed project sites.
An ideal candidate has:
Completed at least their sophomore year or have graduate standing in an accredited electrical or architectural engineering program by the time of the internship.
Some experience with Revit and the Microsoft Office Suite in addition to familiarity with SKM, AGI32, or other electrical systems evaluation programs.
