Job Description
AECOM is seeking an ElectricalEngineer in Chicago, IL focused on outdoor electrical, lighting, and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) engineering projects in Illinois and other states as needed. The engineer will work with senior engineers and mentor entry level engineers to perform assignments requiring application of standard electrical, lighting, and ITS techniques, procedures, and criteria to carry out engineering tasks. The desired candidate would have a desire to work on highway/roadway projects for Illinois DOT, Chicago DOT or other transportation agencies in Illinois including different aviation clients. Project work would focus on electrical (AC & DC) power distribution, roadway and area lighting, lighting control systems, electric utility coordination, electric vehicle charging infrastructure, communications, ITS, fiber optic systems, traffic signal design, and emerging technologies design across all modes of transportation. The engineer will be involved in the design of these systems and equipment including facets of construction management and electrical inspection.
We are looking for a candidate who can execute work in the areas described, grow within our organization, apply engineering judgement, and demonstrate an understanding of professional and ethical responsibilities. The candidate will have the opportunity to mentor younger staff and work alongside senior engineers across the U.S. to gain broader experience in the transportation industry and to further advance their professional career.
Responsibilities
The candidate will need to be a forward-looking team player who can work collaboratively with others, in a dynamic setting to support transportation design projects. The responsibilities of the role will evolve based on the qualifications of the candidate and their success in performing their duties. The core responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:
Perform electricalengineering services for design efforts on transportation and aviation projects
Perform lighting and electrical studies, calculations, and design
Perform ITS studies, calculations, and design
Senior technical resource may serve as technical advisor for team
Perform client interaction, proposal support, and/or task leadership
Develop lighting reports and prepare specifications, special provisions, and cost estimates
Organize and conduct site visits for the purpose of data collection and evaluation of electrical systems, equipment, components, and materials for projects
Coordinate with civil and structural discipline leads as required to effectively engineer, design, and specify electrical/lighting/ITS systems for projects
Coordinate with external agencies, e.g. ComEd, in the design of electrical/lighting/ITS projects
Complete assigned engineering and design tasks in accordance with client specified criteria and applicable codes and standards
Participate in interdisciplinary review of project deliverables
Perform quality control review of design calculations or drawings
Respond to contractor requests for information on design documents during construction
Qualifications
Minimum Requirements
* Bachelors of Science or Bachelors of Arts and 4 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education
Preferred Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in electricalengineering from an accredited university
8+ years of relevant experience with a minimum of five years of experience designing roadway lighting and ITS projects for Illinois DOT, Illinois Tollway, Chicago Department of Transportation, or other public agencies in the last 10 years
Active participation and presence in professional organizations
Strong problem solving, analytical and research skills
Ability to balance various project responsibilities and deadlines while maintaining professionalism and quality
Team-oriented and able to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal supervision
Experience in AGi32 or Visual Lighting design software
Experience with industry standard computer software for the position (examples include software such as Bently MicroStation, AutoCAD, OpenRoads, GIS)
Familiarity with National Electrical Code
Excellent written, graphical, and verbal communication skills
Capable of using spreadsheet, word processing and standard office software, Microsoft Word and Excel
Licensed Professional Engineer (PE) or the ability to obtain one in the first 6 months of employment.

The Project Engineer will support our Project Manager and other departments as needed to deliver projects on schedule, within budget, and to the specified quality of workmanship. Essential job duties include:
Assist the Project Manager with project planning, scheduling, and coordination
Assist with accurate budget management (buy-out, pay applications, cost reporting, etc.)
Change order management
Manage and support project engineers overseeing RFIs and submittals
Coordinate and manage critical subcontractors
Assist in resolving issues related to labor disputes, material deliveries, and contract administration
Support safety and quality control management
Manage construction equipment and related logistics
Provide direct support to the Preconstruction and Estimating teams, including document review, quantity takeoffs, bid preparation, and other tasks as required until project assignment

Analyze system data to identify areas for optimization and implement corrective measures.
Design electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, and panel layouts in accordance with relevant standards.
Project Management
Assist with managing aftermarket projects from concept through completion, ensuring on-time delivery and adherence to budget.
Assist with preparing detailed project documentation, including proposals, technical specifications, and test plans.
Collaboration and Communication
Work closely with sales, engineering, and field service teams to understand customer needs and translate them into technical solutions.
Train customers and technicians on system upgrades, features, and best practices.
Continuous Improvement
Research and implement emerging technologies and trends in control systems to provide innovative solutions.
Develop standard procedures and best practices for aftermarket control upgrades and retrofits.
Perform regular maintenance checks on control systems to ensure optimal performance.
Qualifications
Education and Experience
Bachelor's degree in ElectricalEngineering, Automation, Mechatronics, or a related field.
3+ years of experience in control system design, programming, and troubleshooting, preferably in an aftermarket or retrofit setting.
Technical Skills
Proficiency in programming PLCs (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, etc.) and HMIs.
Experience with SCADA systems and industrial communication protocols (Ethernet/IP, Modbus, Profibus, etc.).
Strong understanding of electrical and control system design, including CAD software for schematics.

Position Scope
This is an in-office position that works out of the Gurnee, IL manufacturing site that reports directly to our Engineering Director.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
This position is very much one of being a working supervisor. While supervising contracted personnel, both professional and hands-on, the individual is expected to maintain a sizable project load.
Direct or oversight responsibility for many of the capital projects undertaken at Vantage Oleochemicals. The normal flow of events in a project may include: completion of project design and developing a firm cost estimate, firm project design and a commitment on equipment, developing bid packages and going to contractors for bids on equipment and installation, coordinating and checking the actual construction, start-up and modifications of finished equipment and an Advice of Physical Completion for the project, and recommending routing maintenance, spare parts, listing necessary information and a financial closing (over or under estimate and why). May act as a Field Construction Manager or, in some cases, the Commissioning Manager.
In the area of technical assistance, the incumbent investigates problems of a production, maintenance or technical nature, such as equipment failure or a process bottleneck.
Problem Solving:
Study existing situations (equipment, processes, manufacturing procedures, etc.), considering possible improvements or modifications, and preparing reports complete with conclusions and recommendations as a result of studies.
Incumbent plans or assist in planning the approach to projects or segments of projects assigned by supervisor and for plant turnarounds.
When assigned complete responsibility for small projects, supervises and participates in all aspects of the projects from inception to start-up (designs, estimates, calculations, test runs, etc.) and resolves all problems encountered.
Works routinely with other department heads and managers to assist in formulation of Vantage Oleochemicals' capital plan and refines proposals for submittal.
Accountability:
While reporting directly to the Engineering Manager, there remains a strong dotted line to the site manager and his staff. Actions taken and plans developed must be formulated with an eye to the site manager being the real customer.
Responsible for assisting in the development of technical improvements in equipment, processes, manufacturing procedures, etc. Directly affects profits by assisting in trouble-shooting equipment and/or process malfunctions and thereby restoring the plant to maximum operating efficiency. Responsible for adherence to safety and health rules & regulations.
Financial Responsibility:
Plays a major role in executing the Capital budget of approximately $10 Million per annum. Annually supervises or participates in 10-12 small ($25,000 or less) construction projects from inception to start-up. Annually manages 1 or 2 major ($.5MM and up) projects, assuming total responsibility for cost, scope, and technical success.
Education & Experience:
Education: Bachelors degree in Mechanical Engineering is required.
Experience:
Minimum 5 to 10 years of engineering experience.
Supervisory experience with small groups desirable.
Well-developed human relations and communications skills.
Experience in the chemical industry or other process plants, with related technologies is strongly preferred.
