Job Description and Qualifications

Air Products and Chemicals, Inc. (NYSE: APD), a Fortune 500 manufacturer of industrial gases, has an immediate opening for an experienced Instrumentation Designer.

You will be a member of a Global Engineering organization. The Global Engineering organization provides functional engineering support to Product Lines for both Product development and proposal development work. You will be responsible for designing/drafting/ checking, BOM's, change management, part specification, drawing revision records, compliance to APCI standards, standard design creation and reuse, and document control. You will gather information from multiple sources including other disciplines, vendors, engineers, reference drawings and catalogs to produce complete functional, accurate and constructible design packages. In addition, this role includes developing detailed job plans and Standards to aide in day-to-day activities.

Excellent communication and leadership skills along with knowledge of Instrumentation Design and the National Electrical Code are required to excel in this position.

Principal Accountabilities:

* Assemble Basic Project Design details and hand over and lead a secondary group of Instrument Designers to execute the Detailed Design.
* Work together with Instrument Designers in various regions.
* Create and design a complete construction/build package meeting the requirements of a project scope document using P&ID, I/O list, and shut down table.
* Such packages may include:
* Instrument Locations.
* Control room, Analyzer, and Loading building layout and design.
* Single lines diagrams.
* Cable sizing for instrumentation and low voltage wiring.
* Cable tray layout and sizing for instrumentation and low voltage wiring.
* Field inspection of plant sites and equipment.
* 24VDC schematics for power, control and shutdown circuits. 120VAC schematics for power and control.
* DCS panel, PLC panel, junction box, and control layout and schematics.
* Design of communication systems using, fiber optic cables, profibus and/or Ethernet.
* AC and DC interconnects as well as conduit and cable schedules.
* Instrument loop diagrams.
* Safe installation of vendor supplied systems.
* Travel to field locations and provide technical services for activities related to construction, equipment installation or plant modifications.
* Ensure inherent process safety is adhered to on all projects.
* Execute projects safely, within the budget and on schedule.
* Ensure all projects meet the operability needs of the customer.

Qualifications / Requirements:

This is a technical position and requires basic knowledge of electricity. You will need a working knowledge of the National Electric Code (NFPA 70), National Electric Safety Code (NFPA 70E), NEMA standards, and some IEC symbology.

* Associate degree in Instrument or Electrical Design from an accredited University or Trade School or equivalent work experience.
* 5-7 years' experience in the industrial Electrical and/or Instrumentation design field.
* approximately 10% travel to facilities and other sites.
* Computer/CAD skills which include:
* Microsoft Office
* MicroStation, MicroStationV7-V8, MicroStation Reprographics, AutoCAD and/or equivalent software
* SmartPlant 3D or equivalent 3D software
* Analytical experience is a plus.
* Instrumentation applications in Wet/Dry Gas service is a plus
* Knowledge of Electrically Classified Areas is a plus.
* Manufacturing plant operations, maintenance, and construction knowledge a plus.

**Overview**

**Education:** High School Diploma or equivalent required. Associate degree in Engineering Technology or Computer-Aided Drafting is preferred.

**Certification:** Certification is not required at this level.

**Experience:** This position requires 2 to 5 years of relevant industrial experience in electrical and instrumentation drafting and design.

Generally responsible for performing routine design of less complex design assignments using theoretical knowledge and practical design methods. This level is expected to assist in the design of larger and more complex electrical and instrumentation assignments. This work will be performed under close supervision.

**Responsibilities**

Primary responsibilities will include but not be limited to:

+ Familiarity with and utilization of department design and drafting standards.

+ Familiarity with project scope, specifications and design criteria upon assignment to a project team.

+ Drafting installation details, motor control center single lines, electric room layouts, motor control elementary diagrams, connection diagrams, cable schedules, control panel layouts and grounding, lighting, power and instrumentation plans.

+ Recognizing and communicating scope and design changes promptly.

+ Providing on-site assistance during startup.

**Qualifications**

+ Familiarity with the current version of the National Electrical Code (NEC).

+ Familiarity with specifications and installation details of construction bulk materials and equipment.

+ Knowledge and application of company engineering design and CAD drafting standards.

+ Ability to perform lighting level and voltage drop calculations.

+ Ability to size wire, conduit and overcurrent protection for both lighting and power applications.

+ Ability to determine motor control center loading.

+ Ability to route conduit and cable tray and calculate tray and conduit fill.

+ Proficient in the use of Microsoft Word, Excel and Outlook.

+ Proficient in the use of 2D AutoCAD and Microstation.

+ Good communication skills, both verbal and written.

+ Virtual team skills and cross divisional relationships continue to develop, and providing interoffice execution support under close supervision.

S&B is actively searching for an experienced Instrument Designer to join our team in West Monroe, LA. The Instrument Designer, under general direction, performs moderately-difficult design assignments which require the application of advanced design techniques in accordance with company and industry standards and codes. Most assignments are performed with minimal guidance.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Responsible for a group of designers/drafters assigned to a single project or working in a specialized field.

EDUCATION

High school graduate with vocational/technical training in basic drafting technology (or equivalent working knowledge/experience), or a 2-year degree in drafting/design technology.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

This is a lead design position. Normally requires a high school graduate with vocational/technical training in basic drafting technology and 10-12 years related experience (or equivalent working knowledge/experience), or a 2 year degree in drafting/design in technology and 8-10 years related experience. Incumbent must demonstrate a sound understanding of design concepts with minimal engineering input and a proficiency in utilizing manual and computer-assisted techniques for moderately-difficult design applications.

TYPICAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

+ Establishes design criteria for assigned phase of a project requiring the application of basic engineering principles, material properties, and a familiarity with construction, installation, and maintenance procedures.

+ Provides conceptual input to projects during the planning stages.

+ Prepares detail and layout drawings and sketches of unusual, complex, or original designs requiring the application of theoretical and practical engineering knowledge. Assignments regularly include determining material needs and performing necessary calculations using accepted formulas and references.

+ Reviews manufacturers' and/or fabricators' prints for conformance with contract specification.

+ Provides lower-level design/drafting personnel with design sketches for preparation of finished design drawings, general layouts, and guidance in refining technical requirements.

+ Supports field assignments and leads field walkdowns as required.

+ Provides technical guidance to lower-level design/drafting personnel and reviews completed assignments for accuracy.

+ Regularly interfaces with other departments, clients, vendors, and project specialists in order to support project production.

+ Performs other related tasks in support of project specialist that are non-routine and complex in nature, such as writing procedures and specifications; analyzing bids; compiling and analyzing various engineering design and/or test data, estimating, etc.

+ Performs certain administrative tasks, such as determining manpower requirements, establishing drawing schedules, assigning tasks to lower-level design/drafting personnel, etc.

+ Prepares moderately-difficult to difficult engineering and construction drawings for a complete phase of a project, utilizing manual and computer-assisted drafting/design techniques. In most cases, only minimal information and very rough sketches are provided.

+ Performs discipline design tasks which regularly require the application of fundamental engineering concepts and mathematical formulas. These assignments may include determining material needs and performing necessary calculations using accepted formulas and references, as well as developing and detailing minor design elements which have not been clearly defined in the layouts or sketches.

+ Reviews manufacturers' and/or fabricators' prints for conformance with contract specifications.

+ Performs routine checking and/or verification tasks.

+ Supports field assignments as required.

LANGUAGE SKILLS

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before clients or employees of the organization.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Occasionally may conduct or participate in a field trip to an operating plant or construction site. This requires normal hearing, the ability to stand, walk, reach, climb and balance, clear close and distance vision, depth perception and the ability to focus. Lifting up to 25 pounds may be required.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Normal work environment will be a business office with moderate noise. Occasionally may visit an operating plant or construction site. This may require exposure to outdoor weather conditions, loud noise, work near moving mechanical parts, electrical energy, construction equipment, vibration, fumes, chemicals and airborne particles.
