Join our Legacy Reporting to maintenance supervisor/manager, the electrician I plans layout, installs, troubleshoots, and repairs wiring, electrical fixtures, panels, machinery, and control equipment by performing their electrical knowledge in accordance with our safety standards. Your Contribution to Excellence Collaborates with Engineering and takes lead on electrical installations to minimize waste of materials, provide access for future maintenance, and avoid unsightly, hazardous, and unreliable wiring, consistent with specifications and local electrical codes. Prepare sketches showing location of existing wiring for new and modified equipment. Measures, cuts, bends, threads, assembles, and installs electrical conduit. Pulls wiring through conduit (EMT, RMC, PVC coated, PVC). Terminates/connects wires using appropriate methods for application. Replaces gear boxes, electric motor bearings, and rewires motors. Installs control and distribution apparatus such as switches, relays, and circuit-breaker panels. Basic welding skills (Stick/MIG). Tests motors for short/opens (Megger) and uses AC/DC volt and amp meters. Tests continuity of circuit to ensure electrical compatibility and safety of components with testing instruments. Maintain and repair PLC'S and associated equipment. Observes functioning of installed equipment or system to detect hazards and need for adjustments, relocation, or replacement. Repairs faulty equipment or systems; follows PM work order instructions. Notify supervisor of equipment malfunctions. Maintain work area in clean, neat, and orderly condition1. Meet all productivity and efficiency standards as outlined by management. The Electrician is responsible performance of electrical repairs and maintenance services along with coordination of external vendors to meet client requirements. Key Duties and Responsibilities Client Service Communication with client managers during all scheduled and unscheduled electrical activities. Respond to client service requests. Monitor service requests in work order management system. Demonstrate exceptional customer service skills and maintain positive and professional working relationship with internal and external clients. Respond to off hour emergency calls. Work with vendors and contractors to monitor and ensure work meets BGIS and client standards. Contribute to the completion of other key initiatives as assigned. Electrical Technician Focus Review Methods of Procedure (MOPs), scopes of work, and system documentation to ensure redundancy and proper electrical paths of travel. Verify all critical equipment is secured, backed up, and tested prior to any electrical work. Perform onsite electrical tasks included in service agreement with the client. Maintain facility equipment as indicated by preventative maintenance plans. Ensure all electrical systems are returned to normal operation after maintenance or testing. Inspect wiring, feeds, switchgear, distribution panels, and related critical infrastructure. Troubleshoot, evaluate, and recommend upgrades as needed. Order parts and supplies for maintenance and repairs as required. Maintain clean, accurate documentation of work performed and equipment status. Respond to issues as they arise, diagnosing electrical faults quickly and correctly. Adhere to all applicable state, federal, and industry safety requirements, including NFPA 70E, NEC/CEC and OSHA standards. Coordinate, process and document all NETA testing activities. Knowledge & Skills: High school diploma or equivalent. Trade school certification, or verifiable training in a relevant electrical field. California Electrical License required and must be maintained in good standing. 3-5 years of journeyman‑level experience in similar electrical work. Preferred experience in mission‑critical environments such as data centers, hospitals, or power generation facilities. Strong understanding of redundancy, electrical distribution, and critical‑system operation. Ability to learn quickly, adapt to changing conditions, and resolve issues promptly. Ability to read and interpret one‑lines, schematics, and technical documentation. Strong communication and teamwork skills to work effectively with BGIS support teams and client contacts. Experience in NETA testing and IR scanning. Proficiency in business environment software applications. Under general supervision of the Supervising Electrician and working independently or as a team member, the Electrician performs the full range of skilled journey-level electrical work at San José State University. This includes the installation, maintenance, modification, and repair of electrical systems, equipment, and apparatuses across the campus. The incumbent inspects, isolates, troubleshoots, and repairs malfunctions; plans layouts and wiring for new or remodeled installations; and ensures compliance with applicable codes and safety regulations. Who We Are: Energy Operations (EO) is responsible for the safe, reliable and efficient operation of Stanford's Central Energy Facility (CEF) and campus distribution systems, as well as the new Stanford in Redwood City Central Energy Facility. CEF provides electricity for the majority of the university's main campus via a 100MW substation, which is about twice the current campus load. Electricity at the substation is transformed from 60 kilovolts (kV) down to 12kV, which can then be distributed as high voltage electric power to campus. The campus electrical distribution system is a largely underground system of 12kV and 4kV cables and switches. Typically, power from multiple sources is brought into individual buildings after being stepped down to 480 volts. Load centers within the buildings step the voltage down to normal service voltages and distribute it to loads throughout the building, with backup emergency power available for all vital loads. The Energy Operations team manages installation, operation, and maintenance of the electrical distribution infrastructure. A Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) system provides real-time information and diagnostics of the campus to monitor the power flow throughout the network, allowing for quick response to system faults. Job Purpose: Employees in this classification perform journey level and high voltage electrician work involved with the installation, maintenance, operation and repair of the electrical substations, electrical distribution systems, and general low voltage utility controls under general supervision.
