This position assists investigators as polysomnographic technician of basic to moderately complex clinical research studies; may be responsible for multiple research studies simultaneously, acting as a liaison with the school, sponsoring agency, community and the study participants; responsible for managing and recording all phases of study protocol as required by sponsoring agency to ensure compliance. This position is PRN and will not exceed 20 hours per week.Job Description Primary Duties & Responsibilities: Sets up, calibrates and monitors recording equipment necessary for PSG, MSLT, NPT and CPAP/BIPAP to ensure artifact free tracings. Recognizes and records clinical and physiological relevant events. Detects and corrects equipment malfunctions. Interprets polysomnogram data. Interviews patients to obtain sleep history. Handles phone calls; answers questions for patients and physicians. Prepares for patients in high-risk situations, as with cardiac or pulmonary problems. Aids in the training of new trainees. Supervises and coordinates activities of other outpatients. Checks inventories and order supplies as needed. Assists with general maintenance and organization of the lab area. Under the direction of the manager of the sleep center, acts as a supportive team member. Will be given general guidelines and direction but is expected to function with initiative and creativity with the objective of department efficiency and technical excellence. Must demonstrate the ability to rely on experience to initiate proper judgment, manage multiple tasks, and engage as a department team member within a limited supervised environment. Expected to develop specification for changes and project plans for improvement in department workflow. Must be able to work effectively with a diverse group of people. Oversees students and ancillary personnel. Must care for a patient population that includes all age groups; therefore, must be able to identify the special needs of each patient according to age and respond appropriately. Performs other related job duties as assigned. Essential Functions: Under the general supervision of the Department Director, performs a wide variety of polysomnographic studies in the laboratory. Demonstrates positive interpersonal skills with patients, patient families, laboratory staff, physicians, and other members of the hospital staff. Explains the test procedure to the patient. Administers patient questionnaire to obtain an accurate and complete history. Applies electrodes appropriately with acceptable impedance levels. Applies appropriate transducers to monitor respiratory effort, airflow, and oxygen saturation. Calibrates, evaluates, and adjusts the instrumentation. Monitors the patient throughout the night, observing cardiac rhythm and respiration of abnormalities. Contacts a staff physician when indicated. Attends the personal needs of the patient throughout the night. Administers oxygen and nasal continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) and BIPAP as directed by the staff physician. Removes electrodes and cleans the patient as needed.

Associate Degree from an accredited institution in Cardiovascular Technology or successful completion of one year (CARD course) of schooling with completion of EKG externship required. Three years actual experience performing EKG's and / or EKG related testing preferred. 2. Actual job experience in the performance of EKG's beyond EKG externship required. 3. Must be able to perform and be proficient in the performance of both: Scanning of Holter monitors and event recorders. (must successfully pass the cardiac Rhythm Test- 85%) Performing exercise tests. 4. Must be able to perform and be proficient in the performance of signal averaged EKG's. 5. Registry in Cardiovascular Technology preferred. 6. AHA/CPR certification required in Basic Life Support Health Care Provider course as identified by the Heart and Vascular Center/Cardiology Clinic policy. 7. Must be able to visualize an EKG tracing on a computer screen and on paper. 8. Must be able to transport EKG machine to the bedside and to properly place electrodes. 9. Must be able to escort patients to EKG testing area and assist them onto cart. 10. Must be able to hear during exercise tests to measure blood pressures. 11. Must be capable of performing CPR. 12. Must be capable of using computer keyboard to access the EKG storage and retrieval system. 13. Ability to communicate clearly for patients understanding.
