Power Distribution Make Ready Designer
Are you a skilled Power Designer looking to join a supportive, passionate team? We have an attractive opportunity for you!
ABOUT THIS OPPORTUNITY: We are hiring experienced Make-Ready Designers (primary focus) and Power Distribution Designers to support engineering projects for major power and telecom utility clients. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience in utility pole design, NESC application, and construction package development, using tools such as DDS, Katapult, GIS, and client-specific design platforms. In this role, you will review field/walkout data, perform clearance analysis, model pole loading, define make-ready requirements, and prepare accurate, construction-ready design packages.
This position requires prior experience in make-ready engineering or power distribution design. Candidates without utility pole design or distribution engineering experience will not be considered.
Note: This position can work remotely, but new hires will be required to come to our headquarters in Perrysburg, OH, for an initial 2-week in-person paid orientation and training period.
WHAT YOU CAN EXPECT TO DO AS A MAKE-READY ENGINEERING DESIGNER AT SIGMA:
You will be expected to execute work orders for the design of power distribution infrastructure while meeting quality, time, and budget constraints.
You will perform end-to-end Make-Ready/Joint-use, and/or general distribution design, applying established design guidelines, processes, and procedures.
There are opportunities to solve problems encountered throughout the design process via team and/or cross-functional collaboration
You will perform Permitting/Easement duties: research pole ownership, right of way, property rights, and permit requirements, and communicate with outside parties to obtain right-of-way approvals and easements.
Related design programs include AutoCAD, MicroStation, BOUD, DDS (Distribution Design Studio), PoleForeman, O-Calc, Katapult, or other customer-specific software.
At times, you may be responsible for performing quality control on others work.

Requirements:
WHAT WERE LOOKING FOR:
High school diploma or equivalent required; an associate degree or higher in engineering, drafting, or related fields is preferred.
Minimum of 1 year of demonstrated experience in make-ready engineering, joint-use design, or electric power distribution design, with 2+ years strongly preferred.
Proven experience in utility pole design, including NESC application, clearance analysis, pole loading concepts, and preparation of construction-ready packages.
Proficiency with CAD or MicroStation; experience using DDS, Katapult, or similar utility pole design platforms is strongly preferred.
Solid understanding of power distribution construction practices and the ability to quickly learn utility-specific proprietary systems.
Must hold a valid drivers license, maintain active auto insurance, and pass all required background, drug, and MVR screenings.
Authorization to work in the United States is required.
Willingness to travel occasionally, including minimal overnight travel when project needs require.
Ability to work a standard MondayFriday schedule aligned with Eastern Time (with Central/Mountain/Pacific shifts mirrored accordingly).

Must be able to utilize a computer keyboard, computer monitor, and telephone for prolonged periods of time.
Must have the physical ability to perform activities such as preparing and analyzing data and figures, transcribing notes, and viewing a computer terminal; these activities require close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
Must have the ability to give and receive detailed information through oral and written communication.

The Vehicle Systems Division (VSD) sits at the center of the ideas and data behind current and future systems supplying innovative research and development; technical evaluations during the acquisition process; conceptual and detailed design; assembly, integration, and test; and operational support. What You'll Be Doing
* Applying engineering principles and practice in the areas of thermal control systems for spacecraft/satellites and payloads:
* Assisting with analysis, modeling, simulation, and assessments relating to spacecraft thermal control systems
* Assisting with experimental investigations including thermal design, thermal control systems integration, thermal environmental testing, thermal model correlation, data reduction and visualization, and engineering application of results.
* Interacting with experienced department staff to identify and resolve design, acceptance and performance issues relating to space vehicle thermal control subsystems.
* Acquire knowledge through supporting projects related to one or more of the following:
* Spacecraft thermal analysis using Ansys Thermal Desktop to predict on-orbit spacecraft temperatures
* Spacecraft thermal control hardware (heat pipes, radiators, pumped fluid loops, phase change materials, heaters, temperature sensors, thermostats, thermal blankets, phase change materials)
* Integration of visible or infrared sensors with cryogenic cooling systems
* Analysis of heat transfer, thermodynamics, single- and multiphase flow, and energy systems.
* Interdisciplinary engineering analysis such as Structural-Thermal-Optical-Performance (STOP) analysis, thermo-structural / thermal distortion analysis, thermal analysis of RF microwave systems, power-thermal energy system optimization, and contamination analysis.
* Environmental testing practice and theory
* Duties, responsibilities and activities may change, or new ones may be assigned as needed
* Training and mentorship will be provided

* Availability to work full-time for a minimum of 10 weeks outside of university term and ability to return to a Master's or Ph.D. degree program full-time after completion of the internship.
* Undergraduate degree completed by internship start date
* Minimum GPA 3.2
* Familiarity with one or more programming languages (examples: C, C++, JAVA, Fortran, python, MATLAB)
* Basic understanding of and interest in all modes of heat transfer, thermodynamics, and fluid mechanics
* This position requires ability to obtain and maintain a security clearance, which is issued by the US government. U.S citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance.

Design Intern Duties and Responsibilities

Graduating December 2026, or later
Able to work full time for 12-weeks during the summer
Portfolio of work is required at time of interview
Experience in leveraging or critically thinking about how to integrate AI into work processes, decision-making, or problem-solving. This may include using AI-powered tools, automating workflows, analyzing AI-driven insights, or exploring AI's potential impact on the function or industry.
Proficient using Sketch, Photoshop, or other relevant design tools
Understands user interface design, heuristic methods, or other usability evaluation techniques, perception, cognition, task analysis, experimental design and statistics
Knowledge of web and mobile technologies, including social networking and messaging information architecture and other productivity applications
Open to learn and actively seeking feedback and advice from peers
The ability to work independently and as part of a team, and bring a willingness to learn through design thinking and execution
Bonus points for having basic knowledge of front-end development technologies, such as HTML, CSS, and/or JavaScript
Excellent written and verbal English communication skills, including the ability to articulate and explain your design decisions
Expected to demonstrate a high level of initiative, good sense of humor, and a “make it work” ethos
For positions in this location, we offer a base pay of $38.25 - $49.04, plus equity (when applicable), variable/incentive compensation and benefits. Sales positions generally offer a competitive On Target Earnings (OTE) incentive compensation structure. Please note that the base pay shown is a guideline, and individual total compensation will vary based on factors such as qualifications, skill level, competencies, and work location. We also offer health plans, including flexible spending accounts, a 401(k) Plan with company match, ESPP, matching donations, a flexible time away plan and family leave programs. Compensation is based on the geographic location in which the role is located and is subject to change based on work location.
