According to vacuumcleanerhistory.com, the first street sweeper was not invented until 1843.
On December 15, 1854, Whitworth’s invention is put into operation in Philadelphia.
Together, the American Tower and the Tank company of Elgin, Illinois were convinced and funded the Elgin Sweeper Company. It was not until 1911 that John M. Murphy invented a motorized version of the horse-drawn sweeper on paper.
They experimented 2 years and in 1913 the City of Boise, Idaho, bought their first Elgin Sweeper.
In 1913, after 2 years of prototyping, the Elgin Sweeper Company sells its first machine to the City of Boise, Idaho.
A study in October 1914 shows that the Elgin Sweeper saves $2,716.77 over Whitworth’s horse-drawn sweeper.
Elgin sweepers have been cleaning roadways since 1914, and while products have grown and improved, the commitment to quality and performance the company was founded on has not changed.
John M. Murphy continued to improve the sweeper and, in 1917, he patented the next version with a conveyor belt to carry dirt from the broom to the dirt box instead of a slat conveyor that was in the original.
