Great company to work for depending on the location and management team.
Some regional managers' true identities will emerge as they manage remote sites while working from home, and their leadership biases tend to grow with the teams they surround themselves with. Diversity, equity, and inclusion can then shift into a rather thin illusion.
I loved the work and the pay; however, the racial tension and favoritism grew to the point where you either recognized it and said something—risking being fired, as happened to some—or kept your mouth shut and pretended it didn’t exist, because the pay was good compared to your skill level.
Only seen a photo of him and read his bio on the company site, but there was no hands-on interaction or opportunity to gauge his leadership style or approach firsthand. It left me curious about his real-world experience and how he manages teams and challenges on a day-to-day basis.
To improve the company culture, I would focus on fostering open communication and finding common ground among team members by engaging with each individual, understanding their unique skills, experiences, and backgrounds. Instead of harping on the negatives, I would emphasize shared goals and strengths within our crafts and culture. Through personal conversations, I’d identify commonalities in values, work ethic, and creativity, which can be used to build stronger team cohesion. Encouraging collaboration and promoting mutual respect would help break down any barriers, ensuring a more inclusive, positive, and productive environment where everyone feels valued.
My military training instilled discipline, professionalism, and clear communication, especially in high-stakes environments. We were taught how to execute complex tasks under pressure and also how to conduct ourselves in briefings and debriefings with Officers, high-ranking officials, and non-military personnel. This involved conveying critical information concisely and confidently while respecting the hierarchy and ensuring that all stakeholders were aligned. The ability to articulate challenges and propose solutions with precision became second nature.
The compensation was high and aimed at keeping personnel content with the ability to grow in the company the benchmark was set high!
At first, the representation of diverse demographics within your organization was impressive. However, the culture shifted when the Regional Manager’s promotional strategy and rhetoric about not finding qualified sub-management personnel from those same diverse backgrounds began to take effect. This change altered the dynamics within that section of the organization, impacting the inclusivity and balance that was initially present.
What brings me the most joy at work is the combination of hands-on problem-solving, leading teams, and seeing the tangible results of my efforts come to life. I thrive in environments where I can apply my technical skills, from advanced controls and system diagnostics to developing real-world solutions for complex engineering challenges. Continuous learning also excites me, whether through earning new certifications like Six Sigma or adapting cutting-edge technologies to optimize processes. Another major source of joy for me is mentoring and leading teams. I take pride in guiding them through projects and empowering them to grow and develop their skills. From my experience in the military to leadership roles in event and project management, I’ve found great fulfillment in building cohesive teams that work together efficiently and effectively!
