Elizabethtown College company history timeline

1899

Elizabethtown College was chartered on September 23, 1899 by members of the Church of the Brethren who were interested in establishing an institution of higher education for their denomination in eastern Pennsylvania.

Founded in 1899, Elizabethtown College is one of many higher learning institutions founded in the 19th century by churches or church members interested in the educational advancement of their denominational membership.

1900

First classes for the new college were held on November 13, 1900, in the Heisey Building in downtown Elizabethtown.

1921

In 1921, the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction accredited the College, and authorized its first baccalaureate degrees in arts and sciences.

1928

Official recognition of intercollegiate athletics at Etown came in 1928 with the hiring of Ira R. Herr as the school's first coach and athletic director.

1993

In 1993, the Church of the Brethren relinquished its governance role at the College.

2004

Launched in 2004, the Center for Global Understanding and Peacemaking focuses on international programs, peacemaking, and civic engagement.

2021

It is OK to Keep Your Research Agenda Broad 2021-22 Ranck Prize Recipient, Oya Ozkanca, Director of Honors Program & Professor of Political Science/Professor of International Studies will deliver the keynote address in Gibble Auditorium to kick off a full day of presentations.

2022
