The first university course in journalism was given at the University of Missouri (Columbia) in 1879–84.
An organization of journalists began as early as 1883, with the foundation of England’s chartered Institute of Journalists.
In 1912 Columbia University in New York City established the first graduate program in journalism, endowed by a grant from the New York City editor and publisher Joseph Pulitzer.
After returning to Paris in 1944 with her husband Pierre Lazareff, she saw that the time had come and she started working on ELLE magazine.
In 1981, Daniel Filipacchi and Jean-Luc Lagardèrepurchased Hachette magazines, which included the then-struggling Elle.
The first UKedition was published in November 1985.
Its international roll-out began in the United States in 1985.
Elle was then launched in the United States (News Corporation owned a stake in the US edition until 1988), followed by 25 foreign editions.

With the remaining 27 percent purchasing single issues, Elle is the only fashion magazine to have increased its newsstand sales in the past five years, most notably with an 18 percent increase in the first half of 2006.
