The life skills paraeducator will address the academic, social/emotional/behavioral, communication, adaptive, including feeding, toileting, or changing diapers/clothing, gross and fine motor needs, and functional daily living skills across multiple instructional settings. Following plans by certificated staff, data tracking and other record keeping activities are an integral part of the position. Essential Job Functions: * Assist students with daily living skills such as feeding, toileting, dressing, and hygiene. * Implement individualized education plans (IEPs) under the direction of special education teachers. * Provide academic support in areas such as reading, writing, and math. * Help students develop social skills and appropriate behaviors. * Support communication development, potentially using assistive technology or alternative communication methods. * Work with small groups or one-on-one with students to reinforce lessons or skills taught by the teacher. * Modify instructional materials to meet the individual needs of students. * Assist in implementing behavioral management strategies. * Prepare and organize materials and activities for students. * Support the teacher in developing and adapting curriculum tailored to students' needs. * Monitor and ensure the safety of students at all times. * Assist in maintaining a positive and structured classroom environment. * Help with classroom organization, including setting up and cleaning up after activities. * Support the teacher in managing classroom behavior and implementing positive behavior supports. * Communicate effectively with teachers, therapists, and other staff about student progress and needs. * Participate in team meetings, IEP meetings, and professional development as required. * Keep accurate records of student progress, behaviors, and incidents as required. * Assist in the preparation of reports, data collection, and other documentation related to student performance. * Assist with transferring or positioning students as needed, following proper safety protocols. * Support students during physical education and other activities that require mobility assistance. * Assist students with inclusionary practices across all school settings. * Engage in ongoing training to stay informed about best practices, new techniques, and tools for working with students with disabilities. * Demonstrate professionalism through punctuality and minimal absences. * Be a positive and productive team member. * Monitor students in a variety of settings before, during, and after school for general supervision and student safety. React promptly to maintain students' safety. * Facilitate the development of positive communication and social skills; support participation and learning in instructional settings. * Collaborate and communicate effectively among special and general education team members. * Have, or be willing to obtain training in a variety of district instructional expectations such as STAR, Styre-Fitzgerald, Teaching Strategies, etc. * Implement KSD adopted curricula and/or individual student plans consistently and with fidelity. * Utilize effective instructional management techniques to facilitate student engagement in learning activities. * Use assistive/adaptive technology and methods, including sign language, to support communication and/or adaptive living skills. * Understand and use social stories or other non-verbal systems to teach and/or address social or behavior skills. * Self-monitor and adjust interactions (including but not limited to physical proximity, vocabulary, volume & tone of voice, sentence length, and use of visual supports) to promote student understanding and success. * Collect student data relevant to individual and/or classroom goals, independently, consistently, and accurately. * Maintain high expectations for student learning; promote and maximize independence among all students. * Know and use de-escalation strategies regarding student behaviors/emotional/social needs. When appropriate, use district approved physical restraint techniques, teaming with/supporting others when physical restraint is necessary. * Understand and use positive reward systems or other non-punitive behavior support systems. * Represent the Kittitas School District in a professional manner when supporting students participating in community or other public settings, through positive communications, social interactions and appearance.
