Individual Placement - Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Program Participant - Kawishiwi
Entry level job in Ely, MN
This summer program will take place in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), located within the Superior National Forest. The BWCAW is one of the most heavily visited wilderness areas in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Within the 1.1 million acres of Federally Designated Wilderness lies a network of largely canoe-based travel routes containing nearly 2,000 campsites and hundreds of miles of trails and portages. The participants will assist USDA Forest Service Wilderness Ranger crews to perform routine trail and campsite maintenance, trail and campsite rehabilitation projects, and visitor education. In addition to maintenance duties, these intern positions would assist with monitoring biophysical and social resource conditions within the BWCAW.
This is an arduous position that involves lifting and portaging 50+ pound tool packs, overnight gear, and canoes. Participants will be required to camp overnight for up to 8 days/7 nights. The main mode of travel is with canoes, but motorboats may occasionally be used as well. Major duties include backcountry maintenance using traditional (non-mechanized) tools including crosscut saws, shovels, pulaskis, and axes, as part of the standard toolkit. Participants will learn how to use these traditional tools on designated wilderness campsites, and wilderness portage and hiking trails. The incumbents will also conduct monitoring and inventory work to support Superior National Forest Plan objectives.
Positions will likely work from mid-May to mid-August but start and end dates may be negotiable.

· Cabins and bunkhouses have on-site parking for personal vehicles; any candidates who come without personal transportation may request to be placed into a bunkhouse that is closer to grocery options.

The Internship is an immersive seasonal position that offers on-the-job training for the logistics, community, and student facing aspects of our organization. This program serves as an on-ramp for people interested in becoming an instructor but without significant experience in the field. Depending on skill level, experience, scheduling, and availability, some interns will be promoted to instructor the same season. Most will complete the internship and will be eligible for re-hire as a field instructor the following season. Internships begin with a 2-day base camp orientation and introduction to the intern crew. This is followed by an 8-day wilderness expedition training, where you will see how VOBS runs our programs from the student perspective. After completion of the wilderness portion of training, interns will return to base for another 7+ days of training in a variety of areas, including driver training, student management skills, technical skills, further orientation into how VOBS operates, and other training as needed. Interns arrive in May or June and stay through August.
Following the initial training phase, interns will perform a wide variety of duties on any given day or week ranging from supporting a rock-climbing day for students, driving to the airport to greet a new student group, packing food/gear for courses, supporting students on our ropes course, dropping groups off to start their expedition, or assisting with facilities maintenance on our 40-acre wilderness basecamp.
The intention is for the interns to have a diversity of work that will deepen their understanding of our logistics, basecamp, students, job responsibilities and prepare them for the demands of facilitating life changing experiences as an instructor. The internship is designed to be an educational experience with approximately 40% of the intern's time spent in student contact and approximately 60% will be spent supporting courses, course delivery, and the base camp community.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
Trainee
Participate in a wilderness training expedition that is modeled on an Outward Bound student experience and thus, has elements of challenge and adventure, living in intentional community, and skill development.
Willingness to learn about VOBS organizational mission and a desire to learn more about mission delivery in a basecamp and field setting.
Technical Skills: Flatwater paddling, rock climbing, top rope anchor building, campcraft, and navigation.

Assist field instructors during course preparation including packing food and gear, and setting up camp before student arrival.
Assist VOBS Facilities Manager in maintaining the basecamp. This includes a variety of tasks that help the basecamp run smoothly and run efficiently. This could include staining a building, cleaning, grounds work, yard work, kitchen work, etc.
Safety Management
Participate as needed to support the basecamp's on-call field response system. This could include paddling or hiking to evacuate an injured student from the wilderness, answering the emergency field line, and preparing food and gear for evacuation teams.
Adhere to local operating procedures, safety policies and emergency procedures as outlined in the field staff manual.
Driving - Able to drive defensively and safely in alignment with VOBS Policies and Procedures . Often in 15 passenger vans with trailers.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS
This is a seasonal, exempt position.
Per Diem Intern pay; $50/day for training/$80 per day once training is complete.
After the first 8 weeks, Interns will promote to support staff and receive $95/day for the remainder of their contract.

Qualifications: Required · Minimum age of 17 years · Adult and Pediatric First Aid & CPR/AED provided by YMCA or other certified organization · Lifeguard certification may be required for some Counselor positions and can be obtained after hire.

Work Conditions: · Must have the physical ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, swimming, team building initiatives, building campfires, physical games, and activities.
· Must be capable of carrying loads of up to 50 pounds and able to traverse hilly and uneven terrain without undue exertion.
· Work in conditions that will create dirt and dust.
· Work in conditions that may require staff to use fire protection equipment, washers and dryers, dishwashers, and specialty program equipment.
· Perform essential program support to camp activities and programs which may include, but not limited to the following activities: semi - reaching to full-reach overhead, crouching, kneeling, shoveling, working in narrow and/or confining spaces underground, overhead, and at ground level, twisting of the waist, shoulders, and legs, and lying on stomach and/or back.
· Must have visual and auditory ability to identify and respond to environmental and other hazards related to the activity.
· Must have the ability to physically manage and support children when needed for safety in general camp activities (child weighing 30 - 200 pounds).
· Ability to perform a variety of tasks outdoor in different climate with daily exposure to the sun, heat, and animals such as bugs, snakes, horses, chickens, etc.

What Will You Do?
* Under direct supervision, the main responsibility of this internship opportunity is to develop risk control and general insurance industry knowledge, and to assist in providing risk control support to home office leadership, commercial or construction field consultants, or staff within our specialist disciplines (property, casualty services, forensics / industrial hygiene lab). Individual Placement - Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness Program Participant - Kawishiwi
Entry level job in Ely, MN
This summer program will take place in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW), located within the Superior National Forest. The BWCAW is one of the most heavily visited wilderness areas in the National Wilderness Preservation System. Within the 1.1 million acres of Federally Designated Wilderness lies a network of largely canoe-based travel routes containing nearly 2,000 campsites and hundreds of miles of trails and portages. The participants will assist USDA Forest Service Wilderness Ranger crews to perform routine trail and campsite maintenance, trail and campsite rehabilitation projects, and visitor education. In addition to maintenance duties, these intern positions would assist with monitoring biophysical and social resource conditions within the BWCAW.
This is an arduous position that involves lifting and portaging 50+ pound tool packs, overnight gear, and canoes. Participants will be required to camp overnight for up to 8 days/7 nights. The main mode of travel is with canoes, but motorboats may occasionally be used as well. Major duties include backcountry maintenance using traditional (non-mechanized) tools including crosscut saws, shovels, pulaskis, and axes, as part of the standard toolkit. Participants will learn how to use these traditional tools on designated wilderness campsites, and wilderness portage and hiking trails. The incumbents will also conduct monitoring and inventory work to support Superior National Forest Plan objectives.
Positions will likely work from mid-May to mid-August but start and end dates may be negotiable.

Key Duties and Responsibilities

Marginal Duties

· Completing recreation site and trail maintenance tasks under the direction of Forest Service Staff.
Required Qualifications
· Driver's License.
· Ability to work independently or as part of a team for multiple days in the backcountry.
· Communication skills.
· Ability to operate a pickup truck or other 4WD vehicle on unpaved roads.
· Ability to prepare your own meals in a remote setting
This SCA Position is authorized under the Public Land Corps Authority. All participants must be between the ages of 16 and 30, inclusive, or veterans age 35 or younger. Participants must also be a citizen or national of the United States or lawful permanent resident alien of the United States. Hours served can be applied toward the Public Land Corps (PLC) hiring authority.

· Experience using hand tools to complete outdoor grounds maintenance.

Living Accommodations
· Selected candidates will be provided with housing free of charge at US Forest Service cabins or bunkhouses. Candidates can expect shared living conditions and must plan to provide their own bedding.
· Most facilities have modern amenities (full kitchens, flush toilets; showers; electricity; Wi-Fi; and on-site laundry). There may be an opportunity to reside at a remote cabin that is off-the-grid and has more rustic amenities if the candidate is interested in that type of accommodation.
· Cabins and bunkhouses have on-site parking for personal vehicles; any candidates who come without personal transportation may request to be placed into a bunkhouse that is closer to grocery options.
Compensation
