Atomic Machines is ushering in a new era of micromanufacturing with its Matter Compiler™ technology. This full-stack technology enables new classes of micromachines to be designed and built by offering manufacturing processes and a materials library that is inaccessible to semiconductor manufacturing methods. It promises to unlock MEMS manufacturing for the many device classes frustrated by semiconductor methods and to open up entirely new product classes. The Matter Compiler™ technology fully realizes the digital manufacturing dream: bits and raw materials go in, and complete, functional micromachines come out. The Atomic Machines team has also created an exciting first device - one that was only made possible by the existence of the Matter Compiler™ technology - that we will be unveiling to the world soon. Our offices are in Emeryville and Santa Clara, California. Day Shift Schedule: This role will begin on a modified day shift schedule (8:30am - 5:00pm) to support ramp-up and training, and will transition within the first six months to the standard shift hours of 7:00am - 3:30pm. About the role: As the Lead Machinist/Shift Supervisor, you will guide the day to day operation of our prototype machine shop in Emeryville. You will produce high quality parts from start to finish, but you will also oversee workflow, assign work to machinists, and ensure that the shop runs safely, efficiently, and with a continuous improvement mindset. You will coordinate resources, train and coach junior machinists, enforce shop standards, and serve as the primary point of contact for engineering teams during your shift. You will think ahead, remove roadblocks, and uphold a culture of excellence in machining, safety, and organization. What You Will Do Interpret three dimensional models and prints, plan setups, program CAM, design fixturing, and perform in process and final inspection Run a wide range of CNC equipment to produce high precision parts quickly and efficiently Program quickly and efficiently in CAM and guide others in best practices Plan and oversee daily machining priorities and balance workloads across the shift Serve as the main point of contact for engineers during your shift and communicate risks, delays, and design for manufacturability feedback in real time Coordinate with other shift leads to hand off jobs cleanly and maintain continuity across all machining operations Lead a team of machinists by setting clear expectations, defining daily goals, and maintaining consistent communication throughout the shift Foster a positive, collaborative environment where machinists feel supported, informed, and empowered to do high quality work Conduct regular performance check ins with machinists, provide actionable feedback, and help remove blockers to maintain productivity Hold the team accountable for safety, quality, and workmanship while modeling professionalism and calm decision making under pressure Train and mentor junior machinists and shop technicians on machining fundamentals, metrology techniques, GD&T, and efficient CAM workflows Provide constructive feedback, support career growth, and reinforce a culture of precision, safety, and continuous learning Oversee tooling and material procurement for your shift and ensure that stock levels support production needs Track machine performance, communicate maintenance needs, and coordinate with facilities and equipment teams What You Will Need Five or more years of hands-on CNC machining experience in prototype or research and development environments, including work with 5-axis CNCs and live-turn mill centers. Proficiency in inspection and metrology, including experience with CMM equipment. Creative fixture and tooling capabilities, with experience designing soft jaws, vacuum fixtures, modular tombstones, and similar work-holding solutions. Proven ability to coordinate multiple projects, reprioritize as designs evolve, and keep the team aligned without sacrificing quality.
