Purpose of Position:
Under direct supervision by a Registered Professional Nurse, surgeon, or other healthcare professional, serves as part of a medical team providing surgical care to patients; facilitates the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures. All personnel perform related work.
Examples of Typical Tasks:
1. Prepares the operating room and sterile field for surgical procedures, including setting up surgical supplies, instruments and equipment using sterile technique and ensuring that surgical equipment is functioning properly and safely.
2. Assists healthcare professionals in receiving, labelling and verifying sterile solutions and medications to be administered during surgery according to established protocol; may assist anesthesia personnel.
3. Verifies patient's identity, correct surgical site, and correct surgical procedure.
4. Assists in moving and positioning patient for surgery; adheres to established safety guidelines.
5. Engages in appropriate gowning and gloving procedures in perioperative setting.
6. Assists healthcare professionals to perform non-invasive preparation of the skin's surface; drapes patients for surgery.
7. Assists surgeon throughout the operative procedure, including anticipating instrument needs. Responsible for handing instruments and other sterile supplies to surgeon; maintains accurate count of sponges, needles and instruments in perioperative setting.
8. Assists in the surgeon's provision of hemostasis during surgery.
9. Holds retractor after placement by a healthcare professional during procedure.
10. Maintains and monitors surgical asepsis during all surgical procedures according to established guidelines.
11. Prepares and applies bandages and sterile and non-sterile dressings to incision site; may prepare suture material as directed by surgeon.
12. May assist with transfer of patient to recovery room following surgery; provides nursing care as necessary and appropriate.
13. Properly cares for, and handles specimens taken for laboratory analysis.
14. May assist with the cleaning of the operating room and replenishment of supplies once procedure is complete.
15. May operate sterilizers, lights, suction machines and electrosurgical units; may assist with diagnostic equipment.
16. Participates in staff development activities as appropriate and required.
17. Performs other related duties as assigned or directed by surgeon and/or other appropriate personnel.
Minimum Qualifications
1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or
2. Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).
Special Note: Any employee who functions as a Surgical Technologist will be required to annually complete fifteen (15) hours of continuing education in order to remain qualified to perform the functions of a Surgical Technologist at an NYC Health + Hospitals facility.

THE OPPORTUNITY
Neighbors In Action (NIA) is a unique neighborhood institution that works to improve community problem solving, collaboration, and inter-group relations in Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, Brooklyn. One program of Neighbors In Action, Save Our Streets Brooklyn (S.O.S.), is a community based effort to end gun violence in the neighborhood. Make It Happen is a program designed to assist young men, ages 16 to 24 in overcoming challenges related to exposure to violence, poverty and inadequate roles models. Participants are given coaching on their goals and visions for their future. All participants are connected to resources to assist in job readiness and placement, education, housing and other appropriate services.
NIA seeks a Hospital Responder to help create better access to on-site victim services and crisis intervention to those who have been directly impacted by violence. The role of the Hospital Responder will be to deliver crisis intervention services and follow-up to those who have experienced violent trauma. The Hospital Responder will support services at Kings County Hospital and on-site at the Neighbors In Action locations in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. This person will be available to travel within Brooklyn to provide services and provide home visits. Professional or personal experience with the criminal justice system is preferred.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Crisis Intervention:
Provide counseling services for youth, young adults and their caregivers/support system as referred by S.O.S. Hospital Workers and S.O.S. Outreach Workers;
Conduct intakes, screenings, clinical assessments and comprehensive treatment recommendations for services;
Assist CV Hospital Responders with follow-up appointments on hospital bedside visits;
Co-facilitate groups with youth and young adults (as needed);
Provide crisis intervention and support as needed;
Provide trauma-informed screening, assessment, and treatment of referred clients;
Complete and maintain all required documentation in a regular, timely manner and in accordance with NIA and DOHMH policies;
Maintain client documentation and records in accordance with funding requirements and Mediation Center policies;
Schedule appointments for participants based on their needs; and
Engage families in wrap-around services.
Supervision and Meetings:
Participate in clinical supervision;
Participate in case conference meetings with non-clinical case management staff;
Participate in agency staff meetings, self-care activities and trainings;
Attend Kings County Hospital recurring partner and stakeholder meetings;
Additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor; and
Communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders including NIA leadership including the Project Director, S.O.S., Clinical, and Youth Program Managers.
Community Outreach:
Canvass community alongside S.O.S. staff;
Attend community events with S.O.S. staff to enhance their gun violence intervention work;
Raise awareness amongst traditional victim service providers to help them strengthen their efforts to work with all victims of violence; and
Additional tasks as necessary.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma as well as a minimum of 2 years' experience or the equivalent in a related area;
MSW or related degree and experience providing crisis intervention work highly preferred;
Knowledge of youth engagement, victimization, community violence and intimate partner violence necessary;
Understanding of the criminal justice system;
Understanding of violence interrupter/Cure Violence projects desirable;
Applicant must possess excellent communication and organizational skills;
Strong team skills;
Must be able to work in a fast paced environment;
Experience with individual case management and counseling;
Understanding of complex trauma reactions;
Experience working with youth and families from “high risk” communities, especially young men of color and juvenile justice-involved youth;

? Be familiar with proper use of all vehicle safety equipment (e.g. stair chair, reeves, child seats, fire extinguisher., etc.).

? Be familiar with all company forms related to ambulance transports, and their purposes. Fill them out properly.

Minimum Qualifications
1. Holds and maintains a Certified Surgical Technologist (CST) credential administered by the National Board of Surgical Technology and Surgical Assisting (NBSTSA); or

Successful completion of a nationally accredited educational program for surgical technologists or successful completion of an appropriate training program for surgical technology in the United States Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps, Coast Guard or Public Health Service Commissioned Corps, and holds and maintains a certified surgical technologist credential administered by a nationally accredited surgical technologist credentialing organization other than the NBSTSA, such as the National Center for Competency Testing (NCCT).

The field associate-EMR transports and assists EMTs (emergencymedicaltechnicians) with clients transported to various appointments, hospitals, schools, and facilities. He/she provides immediate lifesaving care to critical patients who access the emergencymedical services system. EMRs have the knowledge and skills necessary to provide immediate lifesaving interventions while awaiting additional EMS resources to arrive. EMRs also provide assistance to higher-level personnel at the scene of emergencies and during transport. EmergencyMedical Responders are a vital part of the comprehensive EMS response. Under medical oversight, EmergencyMedical Responders perform basic interventions with minimal equipment. The field associate-EMR will comply with all state, local, and company policies and procedures applicable to his or her level of training.

Duties and Responsibilities---
? Be familiar with company policies/standards and always drive in a safe and responsible manner.
? Project a professional image and attitude when interacting with clients, the public and fellow employees.
? Practice safety at all times when handling patients and ambulance equipment.
? Move patients in a safe manner particularly when moving up and down stairs.
? Must wear seat belt at all times when operating company vehicles and require clients to do the same.
? Ensure that wheelchairs and child restraints are properly secured to the stretcher, and that the stretcher is properly secured to the vehicle.
? Perform CPR, as necessary. Immediately advise dispatch of any medical or non- medicalemergencies or incidents involving patients, and other passengers.
? Be familiar with safe lifting and moving techniques and be physically/mentally fit for performance of job duties.
? Be familiar with proper use of all vehicle safety equipment (e.g. stair chair, reeves, child seats, fire extinguisher., etc.).
? Be responsible for assigned equipment. Must inspect all equipment and report any malfunctions.
? Be familiar with all company forms related to ambulance transports, and their purposes. Fill them out properly.
? Adhere to company dress code and personal appearance policies.
? Have a working knowledge of the company communication systems and communication policies and procedures.
? Report all field incidents, accidents, problems, and non-routine situations that have arisen to dispatchers, supervisors, or managers on a daily basis.
? Be familiar with and comply with rules at major receiving client/facility locations.
? Assume responsibility for cleanliness of vehicle on a daily basis. Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspection.
? Make sure that all utilized equipment is replaced at the end of shift, including the replacement of oxygen tanks.
? Be familiar with maps and capable of navigating in all response areas of the company.
? Inspect and report any vehicle damage or malfunction. Must refuel vehicle. Be familiar with fleet card usage.
? Remain in close contact with dispatch, updating them on vehicle location and client information.
? Maintain order on the vehicle.
? Ensure that minors are left with approved guardians.
? Perform other related duties as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. Must be enrolled in an EMT class at time of hire. Will also be required to complete an EMR class prior to field training. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Reasonable accommodations will be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Must successfully complete the company's orientation and training. Must submit to and successfully pass State criminal history review, and drug and alcohol testing program. Employees must also adhere to state EMR education timeline requirements for certification.
Pursuant to N.J.A.C. a BLS ambulance must be staffed with a minimum of two certified EmergencyMedicalTechnicians (EMTs) when it is in service. In light of staffing shortages, the staffing requirements have been relaxed through temporary legislative enactments. P.L. 2021 c.477 authorized BLS agencies to operate with one EMT on a temporary basis. This has been extended through 2024. In the state of New Jersey, an EMR is only permitted to work in conjunction with a New Jersey State Certified EmergencyMedicalTechnician.
