The Emergency Department (ED) is a Level I Trauma Center and serves as a regional referral center for a wide variety of patients requiring acute care. Patients of all ages are seen 24 hours/day, 7 days/week.
There is a total of 45 rooms in the ED, which includes 5 barco-lounger spaces for lower acuity patients. The Emergency Department is divided into five major zones: Major trauma and critical care, Resuscitation and minor care, Pediatrics, Acute care, and Rapid Care.
There are two distinct waiting areas, one for pediatric patients and their families, and the other for all other visitors. There are 7 negative flow rooms, one of which is also an isolation room. Clinical and clerical workstations, nutrition areas, and supply and pharmaceutical dispensing machines are centrally located in each zone. A dedicated radiology suite, including 2 CTs, a DECONTAMINATION suite with a separate entrance, as well as a satellite lab are also located within the Emergency Department. In 2017, it is anticipated that Albany Medical Center will open a Level II Pediatric Emergency Department with 15 exam/treatment areas, 2 trauma resuscitation rooms, and a pediatric observation unit.
Each ambulatory patient is initially evaluated at the triage. Patients arriving via EMS are directed to the appropriate patient care room by the flow facilitator during peak hours. Acute psychiatric services are referred to the Psychiatric Crisis Unit at the Capital District Psychiatric Center. Acute burn patients may be transferred to a regional burn center after stabilization.

It will be used with new EMTs, both new to EMS and new to Union EMU, to further educate them beyond their current knowledge base and tailor their skills to our agencys operations. This program will:
Verify candidates skills proficiency, clinical decision making, and communication skills;
Familiarize the candidate with the different forms of documentation expected by Union EMU;
Help the candidate understand and learn the policies and procedures of Union EMU; and
Assure the candidate feels confident to fulfill his/her role as an EmergencyMedicalTechnician
Physical Demands
The work of an EmergencyMedicalTechnician is physically strenuous and can be stressful. To maintain their position, EmergencyMedicalTechnicians must:
Have good physical stamina, endurance, and body condition which would not be adversely affected by lifting, carrying, and balancing at times, patients in excess of 125 pounds (250 pounds, with assistance);
Be physically able to work twenty-four-hour continuous shifts, if needed; and
Demonstrate motor coordination, which necessary for the well-being of the patient, the EmergencyMedicalTechnician, and co-workers over uneven terrain.
Work Environment
EmergencyMedicalTechnicians have one of the highest rates of injuries and illnesses of all occupations. Risks can be reduced by following proper safety procedures. To maintain their position, EmergencyMedicalTechnicians must be able to work in environments that includes:
Working both indoors and outdoors, in all types of weather;
Considerable kneeling, bending, and lifting while caring for and moving patients;
The potential to be exposed to contagious diseases and viruses, such as hepatitis B and HIV; and
Potentially treating combative patients.
Examples of work can include:
Answers calls for emergencymedical treatment;
Drives ambulance to required location, parks ambulance in a safe location, and creates a safe traffic environment by placement of road flares, removal of debris, and redirection of traffic;
Determines the nature and extent of injury and establishes priorities for emergency care;
Administers emergency care such as opening and maintaining airway, giving positive pressure ventilation, and cardio-resuscitation;
Stops bleeding by bandaging or tourniquets, treats shock, immobilizes fractures, and provides initial care of poisoned and burn patients;
Searches for medical identification emblem as a clue for providing emergency care;
Extricates patient from entrapment;
Radios the dispatcher for additional help if needed;
Prepares victims for transportation in an ambulance;
Cares for patient on return trip to hospital;
Reports to the dispatcher the nature and extent of injuries to ensure prompt medical care on arrival;
May request advice from hospital physician or emergency department;
May deliver newborn infants;
On arrival, transfers patient to stretcher, carries or wheels into hospital; and provides nurse or doctor evaluation of the patient's condition;
Prepares reports of trips made and enters information into a chronological log;
May also act as dispatcher determining priorities in calls for ambulance and dispatching the ambulance; and
Will be required to learn to utilize various types of electronic and/or manual recording and information systems used by the agency, office, or related units.
Duty Requirements
To maintain their position, EmergencyMedicalTechnicians must work a prescribed number of duty hours each month consistent with either the regular or differential requirements:
Regular Requirements
Work a minimum of fifty (50) hours in a calendar month;
Work ten (10) hours of the required fifty (50) hours designated as Weekend, Holiday, and/or Emergency Differential in a calendar month;
Work one (1) assignment designated as a Special Event between January to June; and
Work one (1) assignment designated as a Special Event between July to December.
Differential Requirements
Work twenty-five (25) hours designated as Weekend, Holiday, and/or Emergency Differential hours in a calendar month;
Work two (2) assignments designated as a Special Event between January to June; and
Work two (2) assignments designated as a Special Event between July to December.
Hours worked for Special Events will count towards the monthly hour requirement. However, no hours will count towards the duty requirement if they are designated as Staffing Differential.
Job Knowledge and Abilities
To maintain their position, EmergencyMedicalTechnicians must consistently demonstrate the following:
Knowledge of principles of emergencymedical and first aid treatment.
Knowledge of the techniques used to administer pulmonary and cardiac resuscitation.
Knowledge of the techniques used to administer oxygen.

Ability to read, write, speak, understand, or communicate in English sufficiently to perform the duties of this position. American Sign Language or Braille may also be considered as acceptable forms of communication.

Pay Rate: $ 22.50
The EMT Safety Officer performs daily door monitoring checks and conducts scheduled internal and external rounds. He/she is responsible for responding immediately to all emergency situations at the community and is required to demonstrate the acts and principles of exemplary customer service to all internal and external customers at all times.
* Responds immediately to all emergency situations at the community. Practices proper First Responder protocols and life safety policies and procedures.
* Assists the Safety Assistant Director with random mock testing and training of staff to ensure emergency preparedness.
* Assists the Safety Assistant Director or designated management representative with daily door monitoring checks.
* Conducts scheduled internal and external rounds.
* Maintains departmental emergency equipment and supplies to ensure proper functioning,
* Ensures compliance with policies & procedures and reports all discrepancies and unsafe conditions to the Safety Manager.
* Demonstrates the acts and principles of exemplary customer service to all internal and external customers at all times. Responds to and documents customer complaints in a professional manner.
Qualifications:
* Current First Aid, CPR, AED, and EMT certification
* At least one year of EMT experience
* Previous employment within the medical response environment
* Eighteen years of age or older.
* High School Diploma or GED.
* Ability to speak, read, write and understand English

THE OPPORTUNITY
Neighbors In Action (NIA) is a unique neighborhood institution that works to improve community problem solving, collaboration, and inter-group relations in Bedford Stuyvesant and Crown Heights, Brooklyn. One program of Neighbors In Action, Save Our Streets Brooklyn (S.O.S.), is a community based effort to end gun violence in the neighborhood. Make It Happen is a program designed to assist young men, ages 16 to 24 in overcoming challenges related to exposure to violence, poverty and inadequate roles models. Participants are given coaching on their goals and visions for their future. All participants are connected to resources to assist in job readiness and placement, education, housing and other appropriate services.
NIA seeks a Hospital Responder to help create better access to on-site victim services and crisis intervention to those who have been directly impacted by violence. The role of the Hospital Responder will be to deliver crisis intervention services and follow-up to those who have experienced violent trauma. The Hospital Responder will support services at Kings County Hospital and on-site at the Neighbors In Action locations in Crown Heights and Bed-Stuy. This person will be available to travel within Brooklyn to provide services and provide home visits. Professional or personal experience with the criminal justice system is preferred.
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
Crisis Intervention:
Provide counseling services for youth, young adults and their caregivers/support system as referred by S.O.S. Hospital Workers and S.O.S. Outreach Workers;
Conduct intakes, screenings, clinical assessments and comprehensive treatment recommendations for services;
Assist CV Hospital Responders with follow-up appointments on hospital bedside visits;
Co-facilitate groups with youth and young adults (as needed);
Provide crisis intervention and support as needed;
Provide trauma-informed screening, assessment, and treatment of referred clients;
Complete and maintain all required documentation in a regular, timely manner and in accordance with NIA and DOHMH policies;
Maintain client documentation and records in accordance with funding requirements and Mediation Center policies;
Schedule appointments for participants based on their needs; and
Engage families in wrap-around services.
Supervision and Meetings:
Participate in clinical supervision;
Participate in case conference meetings with non-clinical case management staff;
Participate in agency staff meetings, self-care activities and trainings;
Attend Kings County Hospital recurring partner and stakeholder meetings;
Additional responsibilities as assigned by supervisor; and
Communicate effectively with multiple stakeholders including NIA leadership including the Project Director, S.O.S., Clinical, and Youth Program Managers.
Community Outreach:
Canvass community alongside S.O.S. staff;
Attend community events with S.O.S. staff to enhance their gun violence intervention work;
Raise awareness amongst traditional victim service providers to help them strengthen their efforts to work with all victims of violence; and
Additional tasks as necessary.
Qualifications:
A high school diploma as well as a minimum of 2 years' experience or the equivalent in a related area;
MSW or related degree and experience providing crisis intervention work highly preferred;
Knowledge of youth engagement, victimization, community violence and intimate partner violence necessary;
Understanding of the criminal justice system;
Understanding of violence interrupter/Cure Violence projects desirable;
Applicant must possess excellent communication and organizational skills;
Strong team skills;
Must be able to work in a fast paced environment;
Experience with individual case management and counseling;
Understanding of complex trauma reactions;
Experience working with youth and families from “high risk” communities, especially young men of color and juvenile justice-involved youth;
Experience working either in the community or in a variety of settings: homes, schools, neighborhoods, other agencies, etc.;
Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously;
Friendly and personable attitude;
Detail oriented;
Computer skills for timely comprehensive tracking;
Ability to set and adhere to firm timelines; and
Excellent organizational and administrative skills.

Compensation: The compensation range for this position is $56,000 - $60,000 and is commensurate with experience.
