1976

In 1976, the American Board of Emergency Medicine was incorporated, and on Sept.

1978

In July 1978, the American Osteopathic Board of Emergency Medicine (AOBEM) was established as an affiliate specialty board of the AOA. ACOEP's first Scientific Assembly was held in 1978.

1979

21, 1979, ABEM was formally recognized as a specialty board by the American Board of Medical Specialties.

1980

Six hundred emergency physicians sat for the first certification examination in February 1980, with the first certification of emergency physicians by ABEM that May.

1981

VEP was founded in 1981 to staff hospital emergency departments in California communities that needed a better solution.

1982

In 1982, The Johns Hopkins Hospital assumed responsibility for the program's funding, and Emergency Medicine became a division within the Department of Surgery.

1986

The practice track for AOBEM certification is also effectively closed at this point since it is restricted to those who began emergency medicine practice prior to 1986.

1987

The organization, Board of Certification in Emergency Medicine (BCEM), was formed in 1987 to create a loophole for those choosing to practice emergency medicine without formal training.

1988

In 1988, after a well-publicized 10-year grace period, ABEM eliminated the practice track and began to require emergency medicine residency training to qualify for the ABEM certification exam.

1989

Also in 1989, UAEMS and the Society for Teachers of Emergency Medicine (STEM) merged to become the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM). The Council of Residency Directors (CORD) was formed later as a separate entity representing residency program directors and their assistants.

1990

In 1990, Gregory Daniel, a general surgeon practicing emergency medicine in Buffalo, New York, filed suit against ABEM and other individuals and institutions in academic emergency medicine.

1991

In 1991, the Association of Emergency Physicians (AEP), formerly called the Association of Disenfranchised Emergency Physicians, was formed with the goal of reopening emergency medicine board certification for non-EM residency trained physicians.

1992

The Rape of Emergency Medicine was first published anonymously by "The Phoenix" in 1992, as a quasi-fictional account of the physicians and patients harmed by egregious emergency medicine contract management group abuses.

1993

AAEM was established in 1993 to promote fair and equitable practice environments necessary to allow emergency physicians to deliver the highest quality of patient care.

1994

Its first Scientific Assembly was held in 1994.

The 1994 Macy Foundation Report entitled The Role of Emergency Medicine in the Future of American Medical Care emerged from a conference requested by SAEM and chaired by the president of the National Board of Medical Examiners.

In 1994, the Department of Emergency Medicine was established as a full, independent academic department within the School of Medicine.

2015

In October 2015, US Acute Care announced a slate of new leaders with deep experience in scaling incredible organizations.

2016

October 2016 was US Acute Care Solutions' coming out party.

In November and December 2016, USACS added three new groups, adding about 40 locations in three states.

2017

In September 2017, US Acute Care Solutions and Cedar Park Regional Medical Center announced a new integrated acute care partnership.In December 2017, USACS and Sentara Martha Jefferson Hospital formed a partnership to provide emergency services in Virginia.

2018

In August 2018, Harrisonburg Emergency Physicians (HEP) of Harrisonburg, Virginia, elected to join the group.

The physicians of HEP provide emergency services at Sentara RMH Medical Center (Sentara RMH), the third Sentara facility in the USACS portfolio.In November 2018, USACS brought innovative emergency medicine and hospitalist services to Warren General Hospital in Warren, Pennsylvania.

2020

In November 2020, USACS began providing hospitalist and critical care services at AHC Fort Washington Medical Center, becoming the sole Integrated Acute Care (IAC) system solution to all three AHC hospitals in Maryland.

In 2020, US Acute Care Solutions experienced the same sudden and unprecedented declines in hospital and ED volumes related to COVID-19 that everyone else did.

2021

In June 2021, VEP Healthcare Inc. (VEP) merged with US Acute Care Solutions.

2022

In February of 2022, US Acute Care Solutions announced the acquisition of Alteon Health, which they purchased from private equity shareholders, and Chattanooga Emergency Medicine (CEM), a democratic, physician-owned group that staffs three hospitals in Tennessee and Georgia.
