POSITION SUMMARY: With a positive manner according to Sierra View Medical Center standard of nursing, the R.N. Charge Nurse independently provides holistic, individualized care using the nursing process for patients routinely seen on the unit. Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical competency, nursing judgment, teaching skills, and a commitment to improving the quality of patient care with a positive manner. Is responsible for the coordination of quality patient care through the implementation of the nursing process on a shift basis. Specific areas of responsibility include, but may not be limited to: serving as a resource person, role model, mentor, ensuring therapies and treatments are given as ordered, immediate oversight of staff assigned to that unit. assisting in staff development, and direct communication with the Clinical Managers and Department Director of the unit as well as Administration as appropriate. Must be able to work normal/scheduled working hours to include Holidays, call-backs, weeknights, weekends, and on-call. Agrees to participate, as directed, in emergencies and community disasters during scheduled and unscheduled hours. As a designated disaster service worker you are required to assist in times of need pursuant to the California Emergency Services Act. (Gov't. Responsibilities and Essential Functions: *Indicates Essential Function 1 * Makes patient care assignments utilizing Benner's Novice to Expert. Coordinates with the Director or Clinical Manager/House Supervisor in times of high census as patients are triaged to a lower level of care to include discharge. Coordinates patient admissions, transfers, and discharges with assistance as appropriate. 2 * Coordinates staffing needs with the Clinical Manager and/or Staffing Coordinator/Nursing Supervisor. Ensures accurate reporting of census and patient acuity for staffing purposes. 3 * Coordinates breaks and lunches to provide a reasonable ratio of experienced and orienting personnel to provide ongoing patient care. 4 * Ensures appropriate staff response to all "Code" situations. 5 * Supports achievement of improvement and follows through on actions resulting from QA/QC findings. Encourages participation from coworkers. 6 * Facilitates and coordinates intra and inter departmental relationships or teamwork. Maximizes and identifies resources for quality improvement opportunities on the unit. 7 * Assists in the writing/revising of policies and procedures to keep unit current with regulatory requirements. 8 * Flexes staff up/down based on scheduled caseload, maintains appropriate resource use by monitoring staff and patient changes. 9 * Assists with addressing and diffusing patient complaints and patient conflict situations. 10 * Maintains open, two-way verbal and written communication with staff, physicians, Director/Clinical Manager and all other hospital departments. 11 * Attends daily bed meetings (0900 & 1600) to assist with patient admissions as appropriate for individual unit. 12 * Mentors staff in problem analysis/resolution, encourages freedom of expression. 13 * Is a mentor for staff and participates in leadership and management self-development. Staff Development • Participate in developing, planning, conducting, and scheduling in-service training classes that provide instructions on "how to do the job," and ensure a well-educated nursing service department. • Assist the In-service Director/Educator in developing annual facility in-service training programs (e.g., OSHA, TB, HIPAA, Abuse Prevention, Safety, Infection Control, etc.). • Assist the Director in planning clinical supervision for nurse aide trainees. • Attend and participate in continuing education programs designed to keep you abreast of changes in your profession, as well as to maintain your license on a current status.     Coordinates the care of patients in the county jails; works closely with the jail nursing staff and psychiatrists to ensure continuity of care; uses the nursing process to assess, plan, implement and evaluate the provision of comprehensive psychiatric and medical care; and participates in the delivery of program services and demonstrates thorough knowledge and therapeutic intervention skills based on knowledge of psychiatric mental health disorders, human growth and development and principles of psychiatric rehabilitation. Requirements Graduate from an accredited college, university or vocational school nursing program. Bachelor of Science Nursing degree from an accredited school and/or certification in mental health nursing is preferred. Experience in correctional mental health and/or psychiatric care at a secure facility preferred Current nursing license or eligible for same through licensure by endorsement through reciprocity within state of employment.
