An emergency room physician offers medical treatment to patients who enter a hospital's emergency room. They are the first point of contact for patients who need life-saving care, whereby they resuscitate and stabilize them before any further treatment is done on them. They immediately treat injuries and infections and perform tests and follow-ups to ensure the patients receive the appropriate care.

Emergency room physicians work with a team of other emergency personnel. They also work with patients of all ages, backgrounds, and ethnicities. A successful emergency room physician should have a thorough knowledge of medical practices and procedures, quick decision-making skills, communication skills, compassionate skills, attention to detail, and analytical skills.

Emergency room physicians work in shifts. Depending on the caseload, they may work very long shifts and are expected to be on call 24/7 in case emergencies come up when they are not in the hospital.
