Unit Summary This Oncology Intermediate Care Unit is a 16- bed critical care unit that consists of 2 private rooms and 7 semi-private rooms. OCU cares for adult acute care patients who have a wide variety of diagnoses and co-morbidities providing comprehensive care according to the scope of care defined by the hospital, Massachusetts Nurse Practice Act, American Nurses Association scope and Standards of Practice, and Quality Caring framework and professional practice model at Lowell General Hospital. Diagnoses include but are not limited to; chest pain, congestive heart failure, new onset A-fib, post cardiac catheterization patients, COPD, patients requiring high flow and bipap, GI bleed, and we specialize in oncology/hematology which includes administration of chemotherapy. The nurse:patient ratio is less than on the medical surgical floors, allowing patients to be more closely monitored. Schedules are routinely adjusted and communicated timely with the Clinical Manager and the Scheduler to meet patient and agency needs. * Point of Care standards are adhered to for submission of data no later than midnight of the day of the visit/admission, including closed and sync'd encounters (exceptions to this standard must be reported to Clinical Manager or designee in the same time period). * Software is updated by maintaining the latest version of software applications as defined by the IS Department. * Patient information is prepared and effectively communicated to appropriate departments and team members in accordance with agency standards * Referrals are made to other disciplines and to appropriate community resources to meet patient-specific needs and maximize patient safety and outcomes. * Patients are identified for multi-disciplinary case conferences as needed after Start of Care. * Patient education is provided in the patient's preferred language and format from time of admission and evaluated on an ongoing basis to meet the needs and abilities of patients and families and is appropriate to the care and treatment provided. Teaching and pt/cg response is clearly documented in the medical record. * Discharge planning (that includes the primary physician, family, and patient and accesses community resources) is initiated at Start of Care and evaluated on an ongoing basis for optimal patient safety and outcomes and is evident on review of the medical record. * All patient consent/notification forms are completed as required by Agency policy, law, and regulations, and submitted to the office within 24 hours. * Patients are informed of and consent to planned visits/visit schedule. * Services are delivered in a timely manner and in accordance with patient needs and preferences as evidence by adherence to the plan of care. Licensure and/or Certification * Current licensure to practice professional nursing in Massachusetts required. * BLS healthcare provider required. * PALS achieved within 6 months of hire. * ACLS achieved within 6 months of hire if L&D, preferred. * Certification preferred Skills * Excellent customer service skills. * Basic nursing skills. * Assessment skills. * Critical thinking skills. * Organizational skills. * Computer skills. * Ability to maintain confidential information. * Must have the ability to read, write, and communicate in English
