  • Post Doctoral Fellow - The Handler Laboratory

    Emory Healthcare/Emory University 4.3company rating

Faculty research assistant job at Emory Healthcare

**Discover Your Career at Emory University** Emory University is a leading research university that fosters excellence and attracts world-class talent to innovate today and prepare leaders for the future. We welcome candidates who can contribute to the excellence of our academic community. **Description** The Handler Laboratory at Emory University School of Medicine, led by Dr. Jesse Handler, is seeking a passionate and driven Postdoctoral Fellow to join our founding team. Our lab is dedicated to uncovering the molecular and evolutionary mechanisms that drive pancreatic and colorectal cancer metastasis and drug resistance - and to translating these discoveries into new therapies and diagnostics. We employ cutting-edge approaches in genome engineering, synthetic biology, genomics, and computational biology to illuminate the regulatory networks governing neoplastic cells and tissues. The Postdoctoral Fellow will lead innovative projects that integrate wet-lab and dry-lab technologies. Fellows will be encouraged to develop independent lines of inquiry within the lab's mission while also contributing to collaborative, team-based efforts. We are seeking a scientist whose curiosity, creativity, and passion inspire them to pursue ambitious scientific directions through bold approaches with the potential for transformative impact. The Handler Lab uncovers mechanistic insights primarily through genetic manipulation (e.g., DNA barcodes, CRISPRKO/a/i, sh RNAs) coupled with epigenomic readouts in cancer models. Findings from the lab are validated using patient-derived data, which in turn guides the design of further experimentation - establishing a "bench-to-bedside-to-bench" research cycle that fuels discovery and innovation. As one of the first postdoctoral fellows in the Handler Lab, you will play a central role in shaping both the lab's scientific direction and its culture. Dr. Handler is deeply committed to the success of trainees and will provide close mentorship to support your career development. Fellows can expect: weekly one-on-one mentorship meetings with Dr. Handler; close collaboration within an interdisciplinary, high-energy team; opportunities for first-author publications in high-impact journals; the chance to present your work at seminars and national meetings; inventorship opportunities on patents; experience writing and contributing to fellowship and grant applications; and tailored support for building an independent research program and preparing for the next stage of your career (e.g., academic faculty, industry leadership, or other preferred career trajectories). Our team operates as a highly functional and collaborative unit, with each member taking ownership of their specific roles. Together, we strive to bridge the gap between mechanistic research and patient care. • Research Scientist - School of Medicine Ophthalmology (Ethier Lab)

**Description** The Ethier Lab in the Department of Ophthalmology at Emory University is seeking a highly motivated postdoctoral scientist to join our team working at the intersection of ocular biomechanics, glaucoma, and computational modeling. **Project Summary:** Glaucoma is the most common cause of irreversible blindness, and is often associated with impaired drainage of the aqueous humor fluid from the eye. The critical tissue controlling fluid drainage is the trabecular meshwork (TM). Previously, we showed abnormal TM biomechanical properties in glaucoma eyes (e.g. PMID 27448987). In this NIH-funded project, we wish to further investigate the spatial correlation between TM biomechanical properties, fluid drainage patterns and glaucoma. The research combines **in vivo OCT imaging in mice with** **finite element modeling (using FEBio)** to quantify TM biomechanical properties. Due to the computationally intensive nature of this task, we will explore the use of FEBio outputs to drive a physics-informed AI model as part of inverse modeling pipeline. **Key Responsibilities:** + Develop and analyze 3D finite element models of the aqueous outflow pathway from segmented visible light OCT image sets. + Apply modeling (e.g., iFEM in FEBio) to experimental OCT data gathered at different ocular pressure levels. + Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team (engineering, vision science, ophthalmology). + Lead manuscript writing and present findings at conferences. **Required Qualifications:** + Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or a related field. + Strong experience in **computational biomechanics** , particularly **FEBio** or similar FEA platforms. + Excellent communication and writing skills. **Preferred but not required:** + Familiarity with ocular biomechanics or glaucoma. + Experience in optical coherence tomography (OCT). + Experience in physics-informed AI approaches. We welcome researchers with an interest in mentoring junior trainees and developing their own funding profile. The position is available immediately and includes competitive salary and benefits. The initial appointment is for up to four years. More about Ethier lab research at: C. Ross Ethier - Google Scholar MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: + Bachelor's degree and 7 years of related experience or equivalent combination of experience, education and training. + Strong technical background.
