Emory & Henry College company history timeline
The foundation for Wiley Hall was laid on September 30, 1836.
Located in the Highlands of Virginia, Emory & Henry has devoted itself since 1836 to the belief that education can have a transformative effect on an individual, a place and ultimately the wider world.
With the inauguration of Richard G. Waterhouse as president in 1893 and an improvement in the regional economy, enrollment stabilized and the college began an ambitious building program.
Women first enrolled at Emory & Henry in 1899, and true coeducation was implemented gradually over the next three decades.
Daughter of President Richard Waterhouse, Edith Waterhouse, class of 1907, the college's first female graduate, was hired as the first female faculty member and taught in the College's preparatory department.
The administrative operation of Martha Washington College, a Methodist-affiliated school for women located in Abingdon, Virginia, was merged with that of Emory & Henry College in 1918.
When Martha Washington College closed in 1931, many of the students transferred to Emory & Henry.
Two new residence halls were built in 2006 in The Village.
