JOB DESCRIPTION:
The Academic ResearchScientist functions as a highly skilled contributor/researcher and has significant authorship on publications and advanced knowledge and expertise of laboratory and experimental platforms necessary to advance basic and/or translational research programs.
Staff Scientists will have leadership responsibilities, and will oversee quality and training of other team members.
Duties include designing, developing and conducting research experiments.
Will have expert knowledge and skills specific to the related program and advanced knowledge of methods of analyzing data from experimental platforms.
May assist in grant and other funding applications as necessary and appropriate, or with approval of the responsible faculty director, may have their own research projects and/or have full responsibilities for specific areas of a program.
With the approval of the responsible Emory faculty director, the Academic ResearchScientist may serve as the principal investigator on funded (grant) proposals.
Performs other responsibilities as required.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
PhD and two years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab
OR master's degree and four years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab
OR bachelor's degree and six years of professional level experience in a technical or research lab.
Laboratory experience should be based on area of assignment.
Internship experience or experience prior to attaining the qualifying degree is not considered eligible work experience for this job classification.

Job responsibilities include performing a variety of statistical and econometric analyses, cleaning and analyzing data, writing research reports, conducting background research and literature reviews, identifying and obtaining secondary data, coding survey questionnaires, and managing field activities. Independent thinking, a thorough understanding of economics or related disciplines, an ability to manage work flows on multiple projects, and self-motivation are highly valued in performing these functions.
This is a challenging opportunity for an early-career professional who is passionate about social science research and has a strong desire to expand and deepen skills in economic research and quantitative data analysis. You will work closely with one or more of the professors, who will provide supervision on research and offer mentorship on academic development more broadly. You will also be encouraged to be an active part of the research community, within the BEPP department and in relevant Wharton research centers. We anticipate that the successful candidate would work in this position for 2 years, before going on to graduate programs or careers in Economics, Public Policy, or another quantitative social science.

BA/BS in Economics, Statistics, Data Science, or a related quantitative discipline;
Previous experience as a research analyst or conducting independent research using statistical software such as STATA or R is preferred;

Academic ResearchScientist in Cancer and Kidney Biology Hong Lab
The Hong Lab (******************* is seeking a highly-motivated researchscientist to join a team of scientists using functional genomics to study the development and consequences of abnormal development in the kidney, identify new biology and therapeutic targets in childhood and young adult kidney/brain cancers. These include Wilms Tumor and cancers involving the SWI/SNF chromatin modifying complex such as Renal Medullary Carcinoma, Rhabdoid Tumor and Atypical Teratoid/ Rhabdoid Tumor.
Our research laboratory is housed within the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center at Emory University and Children's Healthcare of Atlanta in the Health Science Research Building. Scientists will have access to resources within the Aflac Cancer and Blood Disorders Center, the Winship Cancer Institute, the Pediatric Research Alliance along with collaborators at Georgia Institute of Technology. Furthermore, fellows are encouraged to observe the clinical aspects of pediatric oncology to understand the impact of our work on our patients.

Dr. Hong is an Assistant Professor in Pediatrics with an Endowed Investigatorship focused on the study of high-risk childhood kidney and brain cancers.
He was previously on the faculty at Harvard Medical School.
He completed his post-graduate and post-doctoral training at Boston Children's Hospital, the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute and the Broad Institute of Harvard and MIT.
His mentorship style is to meet weekly with trainees.
This will be through a mix of giving presentations, meeting with donors, learning how to write grants, identifying independent research projects, writing manuscripts together as well as training recent college graduates along with undergraduate and graduate students.

* Laboratory experience and technical expertise should align with the research focus on immune-metabolic interactions in intestinal inflammation.

ADDITIONAL JOB DETAILS:
The Research Specialist Supervisor will support ongoing research projects by performing laboratory work, data collection and analysis, and maintaining equipment and records. Our research aims at exploring mechanisms of heme/iron-driven toxicities in sickle cell diseases, and this position will support multiple studies in this area of investigation.
This role involves working closely with the principal investigator, postdoctoral researchers, and other team members to ensure the smooth operation of research activities.
Conduct laboratory experiments, assays, and in vivo/in vitro studies according to established protocols and under the guidance of senior researchers.
Collect, process, and analyze samples or data using scientific equipment and software.
Maintain accurate and detailed records of experiments and results in lab notebooks or digital formats.
Prepare reagents, solutions, and other materials required for experiments.
Operate, maintain, and calibrate laboratory instruments and equipment.
Assist in literature reviews, data entry, and preliminary analysis of research findings.
Contribute to the preparation of reports, presentations, and publications.
Ensure compliance with laboratory safety protocols and institutional regulations.
Perform administrative tasks related to the research project (e.g., ordering supplies, inventory management, data archiving).
Handling mouse colonies, maintaining accurate mouse colony record, genotyping and working with mice on a regular basis
Working with mammalian cell culture (primary and cell lines), including human bone marrow and peripheral blood cells.
Reporting technical and research progress when needed.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Bachelor's degree in a related science field and four years of research experience of which one year is in a supervisory role in a laboratory, OR equivalent combination of experience, education, and training.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
A Master's degree is a plus for Research Specialist roles.
Minimum 3 years of relevant research experience in a laboratory setting. Prior experience with mouse handling is required.
Experience with flow cytometry is a plus.
Proficiency in standard laboratory techniques and safety procedures.
Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
Effective written and verbal communication skills.
Basic knowledge of data analysis tools.
