Empire Airlines company history timeline

1979

Renamed to USAIR in 1979.

By 1979, the Orofino, Idaho-based business expanded to include flight patrol, air ambulance, air pollution monitoring, charters and flight instruction.

However in 1979, the recommendation was to leave the airport in its current location as a general aviation airport.

1982

Empire acquired additional F-28s from Philadelphia-based Altair Airlines after that airline shut down in 1982.

After Deregulation, Piedmont expanded into the Northeast, starting with a hub opened at Baltimore-Washington International Airport in about 1982.

1984

By 1984 Roseburg was no longer a candidate for third level passenger service.

1985

In 1985, the airline was purchased by Piedmont Airlines, which itself was later purchased by USAir and whose name now lives on in the US Airways Express network.

1987

In about 1987, Piedmont opened an extension to the south concourse at Syracuse Hancock Airport to handle additional growth.

1992

In 1992 the airport was renamed Roseburg Regional Airport to reflect its importance in Southern Oregon aviation.

2000

From 2000 to the present, the City of Roseburg has aggressively pursued funding to continue to maintain and upgrade the airport’s facilities, services and infrastructure, most recently with the completion of a runway extension and relocation of the taxiway.

2004

Also in 2004, the Empire Airlines Board of Directors accepted Idaho’s proposal for new hangar and office at the Coeur d’Alene Airport in Hayden, Idaho.

2006

AMERICA WEST was integrated in beginning in early 2006.
