So you\u2019ve just hired a new recruit. It\u2019s going to take a while for them to settle in, let their defences down, and reveal their true nature and assets. They seemed confident, talented, and ambitious in the interview \u2013 but so did half the other candidates. How can you know who it is that you\u2019re really<\/em> dealing with?<\/p>\n

The short answer is: you can\u2019t. There are no shortcuts with human nature \u2013 none you can rely on, anyway. The challenge and the reward of getting to know your staff<\/a> is that it takes time, and requires shared experiences through good times and bad.<\/p>\n

But what you can do is to use a framework from which to operate while they learn to relax around you. And for this, you might turn to the famous DiSC system defining twelve distinct character types, so you can broadly characterize how best to work with one colleague or another depending which profile they fit.<\/p>\n

This new personality tool created by our friends at OnStride Financial\u00a0promises to help you do that, by offering word clouds based upon each of the DiSC personality types. When you approve a new candidate, try to create a list of the words that they used to describe themselves, and the impressions that you got: find which type these words best fit, and you\u2019ll know before they start whether you\u2019re working with a \u2018Challenger\u2019, a \u2018Collaborator\u2019, or whoever.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s a great way to get a head-start on the getting-to-know-you process.<\/p>\n
