And as one of the supporters of his \u201cUncensored\u201d series, in addition to exhibiting at the events, we were also able to sit in on the workshops and hear what the renowned motivational business speaker had to say.<\/p>\n<p>Pretty solid take-aways? Absolutely!<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Now for many, Brad Sugars probably doesn\u2019t need too much of an introduction. But for anyone not so familiar with the ActionCOACH success story, please allow me to bring you up to speed (well at least in a few lines anyway).<\/p>\n<p>Although he claims to have been selling his Christmas presents to his brothers at the age of seven, Brad Sugars started the ActionCOACH brand when he was in his early twenties. Today the company is internationally recognised as the leading global business coaching firm and one of the leading and most awarded franchises.<\/p>\n<p>We attended two of the workshops on his Australian \u201cUncensored\u201d road show during which Brad was able to share his story with close to 500 business owners.<\/p>\n<p>His presentations were informative, engaging and at times extremely entertaining.<\/p>\n<p>I wanted to share some of his tips and tangible strategies for breaking out of the daily rut and growing a global business. At least these are the main take-aways that resonated most with us. [I\u2019m smiling as I write this, since right now I am actually on a flight from Australia to the USA to spend a few weeks over in our San Francisco office \u2026 just part of taking the RecruitLoop business global!].<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"1-whats-your-identity\"><strong>1.\u00a0What\u2019s your identity?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>How do you identify yourself? Do you say, \u201c<em>I am a small business owner<\/em>\u201d? Or do you say, \u201c<em>I\u2019m an entrepreneur<\/em>\u201d, or \u201c<em>I\u2019m building a global business<\/em>\u201d?<\/p>\n<p>Whatever comes after those two small words \u201c<em>I am<\/em> \u2026\u201d is what you are in the minds of others. They\u2019ve already made their decision.<\/p>\n<p>Without wanting to sound too \u2018out there\u2019, if you want to grow your business, you really need to Think Big.<\/p>\n<p>I had a client once who, every time we caught up, would say to me as he walked me out of his office \u201c<em>Remember, Paul \u2026 go big or go home!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He was right.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"2-what-are-your-goals\"><strong>2.\u00a0What are your goals?<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Brad referred to three different types of goals and he explained why it\u2019s important to understand your mindset behind each one.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Negatively phrased goals<\/strong> \u2013 like \u201c<em>I don\u2019t want to work 80 hours a week<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>I don\u2019t want to work on weekends<\/em>\u201d. You\u2019ll probably keep repeating the goals over and over but then just end up continuing to work 80 hours every week and work all weekend.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Positively phrased goals<\/strong> \u2013 like \u201c<em>I only want to work 6 hours a day<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>I only want to work 4 days a week<\/em>\u201d. But you can\u2019t just repeat these goals (like affirmations). You need to start planning exactly how you can make this work for you and the business.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Legacy goals<\/strong> \u2013 these types of goals that you set for yourself are about achieving something bigger than just you, and bigger than just your business.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3 id=\"3-why-its-important-to-communicate-your-culture-vision-and-values\"><strong>3.\u00a0Why it\u2019s important to communicate your culture, vision and values<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Brad explained that if you can\u2019t communicate your core values, and the vision and the culture of your business then you won\u2019t be able to motivate your staff (existing and future) or get them excited to join you on your journey.<\/p>\n<p>He shared the Zappos success story\u00a0\u2013 how they started out and where they are today. By the way it\u2019s an inspiring read!<\/p>\n<p>Co-incidentally we recently shared some of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/casual-fridays-clock-watchers-smoke-breaks-other-culture-defining-moments\/\">our own ideas<\/a> around the importance of defining culture.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"4-why-you-need-to-get-your-recruitment-right\"><strong>4.\u00a0Why you need to get your recruitment right<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>As someone who has been in the recruitment game for two decades, I couldn\u2019t agree more with Brad here. To grow your business you must nail your recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>Brad shared the analogy of a sports team who do everything they can to attract the best of the best (often paying whatever it takes), because they want to win and because they want a team of top performers.<\/p>\n<p>He also shared his philosophy of \u201c<em>hire slow \u2026 fire fast<\/em>\u201d, one that is shared by many successful business leaders.<\/p>\n<p>If you\u2019re still convinced you want to do all your recruiting yourself, RecruitLoop has <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/\">plenty of resources<\/a>\u00a0to help you get your recruitment right. Sorry \u2026 I couldn\u2019t resist!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"5-understanding-your-role-as-the-leader\"><strong>5.\u00a0Understanding your role as The Leader<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>In presentations I have given over the years, I\u2019ve often explained how \u201c<em>Leadership is the art of keeping all the people who hate you away from the ones who haven\u2019t made up their minds yet<\/em>\u201d (it usually gets a laugh!)<\/p>\n<p>One of my former bosses used to talk about the \u201c4 C\u2019s\u201d of leadership and it was reassuring to hear Brad referring to them too \u2026<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Clarity<\/strong> \u2013 Having a clearly thought out strategy<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate<\/strong> \u2013 Creating a team of high performers<\/li>\n<li><strong>Communication<\/strong> \u2013 A good leader will never be accused of over communicating<\/li>\n<li><strong>Courage<\/strong> \u2013 It\u2019s OK to reveal your vulnerability. Nobody\u2019s perfect.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Don\u2019t let others drive your business. Take the reins. You need to run the show.<\/p>\n<p>As my former boss used to say \u2026 \u201c<em>You can\u2019t let the lunatics drive the bus<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"6-why-you-need-to-sell-what-people-want-not-what-you-want-to-sell\"><strong>6.\u00a0 Why you need to sell what people want \u2013 not what you want to sell<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Boy was it refreshing to hear Brad say this.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst it might seem so obvious, too many business owners fail to grasp this concept.<\/p>\n<p>Brad gave the perfect example the of the Cirque du Soleil phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>They started out as an ordinary circus selling tickets to children for $10. They then they realised if they marketed the circuses to adults (and not just to children) they could charge more. Then they asked the adults what they really wanted and the answer was live music, less animals and more of a concert like setting.<\/p>\n<p>Today Cirque du Soleil sells tickets for $200 with sold-out shows all over the world.<\/p>\n<p>Are you selling what people want to buy or what you want to sell?<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">* \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0* \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0*<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">This was just a snapshot of three jam-packed hours of information. But as I mentioned I wanted to share a few key take-aways.
