{"id":5547,"date":"2014-10-16T09:25:54","date_gmt":"2014-10-16T16:25:54","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/recruitloop.wpengine.com\/?p=5547"},"modified":"2023-05-09T19:15:23","modified_gmt":"2023-05-10T02:15:23","slug":"why-your-elevator-pitch-depends-on-whos-in-the-elevator-with-you","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/why-your-elevator-pitch-depends-on-whos-in-the-elevator-with-you\/","title":{"rendered":"Why Your Elevator Pitch Depends On Who\u2019s In &#8216;The Elevator&#8217; With You"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In the past we\u2019ve published a few different posts on the importance of having a carefully crafted elevator pitch \u2013 a punchy statement aimed squarely at your target audience where you convey what you do, who you do it for, and why you do it.<!--more--><br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/how-well-do-you-articulate-what-you-do\/\">How well you are able to articulate what you do<\/a>\u00a0can often be the \u2018make or break\u2019 between someone believing in you, trusting you, and ultimately agreeing to buy from you.<\/p>\n<p>Last week I was fortunate enough to be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/hrtechconf-2014-even-more-rubber-bands\/\">exhibiting at a trade show <\/a>in Las Vegas.<\/p>\n<p>Of course I fully expected to be in \u2018elevator pitch overdrive\u2019 standing at our booth in the main expo hall for three days. After all isn\u2019t that why people choose to exhibit at a Vegas trade show?<\/p>\n<p><em>Sin City? Casinos? Cirque du Soleil(s)? The Strip? \u2026 Sorry I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about!<\/em><\/p>\n<p>But I actually found myself pitching just as much (perhaps even more so) away from our booth and even after I\u2019d left the trade show. I also quickly realised that by tweaking my elevator pitch depending on where I was and who I was talking to, I was able to spark interest, create intrigue, and strike up conversations with people who may not necessarily have even been our \u2018target\u2019 audience (at face value anyway).<\/p>\n<p>You never know who other people know \u2026 So you really need to have an elevator pitch ready at all times. It just depends on who\u2019s in \u2018the elevator\u2019 with you.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"what-happens-in-vegas-stays-in-vegas\"><strong><em>What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas!<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Isn\u2019t that what they say?<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d grabbed a late dinner with some of the team (which may or may not have included a <em>very<\/em> large Vegas cocktail!). We then found ourselves at one of the trade show major sponsor\u2019s events \u2026 a <em>Third Eye Blind<\/em> concert.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/3rd-eye-blind.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-5548 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/recruitloop.wpengine.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2014\/10\/3rd-eye-blind-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"3rd eye blind\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>If, like me, you\u2019re asking \u201c<em>who?<\/em>\u201d \u2026 don\u2019t worry you\u2019ll know this one!<\/p>\n<p>There I was, after a long day at the trade show booth, still in my RecruitLoop t-shirt walking into a club carrying my laptop at 11:00pm!<\/p>\n<p>The music was pretty loud (by my standards anyway!) and I wasn\u2019t even sure if the person who came up to me had asked \u201c<em>how are you?<\/em>\u201d, \u201c<em>who are you?<\/em>\u201d or \u201c<em>what do you do?<\/em>\u201d \u2026 But I chose to respond to option 3.<\/p>\n<p>It was definitely the first time I had ever had to actually shout out an\u00a0elevator pitch at a concert. But apparently (and despite perhaps being a little tipsy), I still made complete sense!<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"sometimes-you-have-to-stretch-the-facts-a-little\"><strong>Sometimes you have to \u2018stretch\u2019 the facts a little &#8230;<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I needed to get to the airport. The taxi queue was ridiculously long and not moving at all. I was starting to get anxious \u2026<\/p>\n<p>A black stretch limo pulled up and the driver got out. He held up a placard that said \u201c<em>$80 to anywhere in Vegas<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>There were at least 150 people waiting in the line and many of them had carry on bags and looked \u2018airport bound\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>I went straight up to the limo driver. \u201c<em>Give me one sec<\/em>\u201d \u2026<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Who\u2019s coming with me?<\/em>\u201d I asked the group of people who had been standing immediately around me. \u201c<em>8 of us can get to the airport for $10 each. That\u2019s way cheaper than a cab<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>So 7 strangers piled into the stretch limo with me!<\/p>\n<p>They\u2019d all been at a \u2018science meets nutrition\u2019 trade show but didn\u2019t know each other.<\/p>\n<p>Given that I had arranged the joy ride, I suggested we go around the limo playing a game of \u2018pitch in a limo\u2019 on the way to the airport (a whole 10 minute drive).<\/p>\n<p>We heard from a \u2018ginseng root extract\u2019 business owner from Foster City, a nutritionist from Iowa, and a representative from Natraceuticals in Utah, before it was my turn.<\/p>\n<p>By the time we reached the terminal, I had 2 requests for a follow-up call, and one guy say \u201c<em>I know you clearly don\u2019t market yourself to job seekers, but here\u2019s my card in case you happen to know anyone who might be looking for a veteran supplements sales rep!<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"whats-recruitloop-is-that-like-a-fruit-loop\"><strong><em>\u201cWhat\u2019s RecruitLoop? Is that like a Fruit Loop?\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I only read books in airports and on planes. And I usually use my boarding pass as my bookmark.<\/p>\n<p>But since I knew they\u2019d be able to scan my boarding pass from my phone, I\u2019d decided to use one of my business cards as a bookmark instead.<\/p>\n<p>I didn\u2019t notice my \u2018bookmark\u2019 fall on to the floor until a young boy stood in front of me holding it out. \u201c<em>What\u2019s RecruitLoop?\u201d, he asked. Is that like a Fruit Loop?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I told him.<\/p>\n<p>What would your pitch be to an 8 year old?<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"step-over-here-please-sir-this-is-just-a-routine-search\"><strong><em>\u201cStep over here please, sir. This is just a routine search\u201d<\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>I travel <em>a lot<\/em> and I have my routine pretty down pat when it comes to going through security. Put wallet, watch and phone in laptop bag; laptop and iPad in one tray; belt, shoes and jumper in another.<\/p>\n<p>The body scan machine was out of order and a rather large security officer whose smile had clearly been permanently removed ushered me to one side.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Step over here please, sir. This is just a routine search<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>For some reason I\u2019d kept my tracksuit top on and some coins in my pocket had caused his detector to beep.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Jacket<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I took off my tracksuit top. I had a RecruitLoop t-shirt on underneath (not the same one I\u2019d worn to the <em>Third Eye Blind<\/em> concert!).<\/p>\n<p>He was about to start \u2018the frisk\u2019, when he looked me right in the eye. \u201c<em>RecruitLoop, hey? What\u2019s up with that?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>So I told him \u2026 mid pat down.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Hey \u2026 you think you can get me out of this mundane job?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The reason I had to stop myself laughing right into his face was that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/breaking-police-now-targeting-slow-drivers-in-random-brand-tests\/\">this wasn\u2019t the first time<\/a> I\u2019d been asked to help a police officer find a new job.<\/p>\n<h3 id=\"passengers-are-not-permitted-to-congregate-outside-the-toilets-on-board-the-aircraft\"><strong><em>\u201cPassengers are not permitted to congregate outside the toilets on board the aircraft\u201d <\/em><\/strong><\/h3>\n<p>Anyone who\u2019s done it knows it\u2019s a pretty long flight from Los Angeles back to Australia.<\/p>\n<p>And anyone who\u2019s ever travelled with me knows I like to get up and stretch my legs quite a lot (which is why I prefer\u00a0an aisle seat!).<\/p>\n<p>There had been a <em>lot<\/em> of turbulence and the seat belt sign had been on for over two hours. As soon as it went off half the plane immediately stood up to use the bathrooms.<\/p>\n<p>There were about 10 people in front of me when the announcement came over the PA system.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<em>Passengers are not permitted to congregate outside the toilets on board the aircraft<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Nobody seemed to pay much attention to it at all.<\/p>\n<p>The guy in front of me mumbled \u201c<em>Sorry \u2026 but when you\u2019ve gotta go, you\u2019ve gotta go<\/em>\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>I smiled and continued to stretch my legs while waiting in the aisle.<\/p>\n<p>Then came the awkward moment when the guy in front of me came back out of the toilet and said, \u201c<em>So tell me \u2026 what\u2019s RecruitLoop?<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I was still wearing my RecruitLoop t-shirt \u2026 (yes \u2026 the same one I\u2019d been wearing as I walked through security \u2026 not the one I\u2019d worn to the <em>Third Eye Blind<\/em> concert!).<\/p>\n<p>At 39,000 feet it was more like an \u2018elevated\u2019 pitch \u2026 but it worked.<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s having major problems finding staff.<\/p>\n<p>We\u2019re meeting next Thursday!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>You need to have your elevator pitch ready at all times.
