{"id":7328,"date":"2015-08-30T16:45:40","date_gmt":"2015-08-30T23:45:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/recruitloop.wpengine.com\/?p=7328"},"modified":"2023-05-12T12:06:23","modified_gmt":"2023-05-12T19:06:23","slug":"5-common-hr-mistakes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/5-common-hr-mistakes\/","title":{"rendered":"5 Of The Most Common HR Mistakes Business Owners Make"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I am often confronted by business owners and managers who are at their wits end in terms of understanding and knowing what steps they should be taking to manage their staff in the workplace. I sometimes think if people were robots, then we\u2019d have no trouble and in some respects management wouldn\u2019t need to exist. Unfortunately (or fortunately depending on your perspective) people aren\u2019t robots and we must be able to effectively manage issues as they arise at work.<!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Below are the 5 of the most common HR mistakes I see business owners making and some suggestions on how you can avoid them.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"1-not-meeting-regularly-with-the-staff\"><strong>1.\u00a0Not meeting regularly with the staff<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Most businesses take a philosophy of meeting once a year with their staff. The meeting usually involves some basic <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/how-to-avoid-the-feedback-sandwich-when-evaluating-staff\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">feedback<\/a> and their annual salary review.<\/p>\n<p>It may be half an hour or an hour and a few pats on the back to say \u201c<em>thanks for all your help<\/em>&#8221; and \u201c<em>we love your work, keep it up<\/em>\u201d. We might delve into, \u201c<em>So, where do you see yourself in 2- 5 years?<\/em>\u201d There may even be a small discussion of things the staff member can work on going forward.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s a lot to cram into in an hour!<\/p>\n<p>In some respects if you truly value your\u00a0staff, why wouldn\u2019t you have these discussions more regularly throughout the year?<\/p>\n<p>From a HR perspective, the best appraisals occur <em>throughout<\/em> the year and not just once a year.<\/p>\n<p>Take the opportunity to meet more often (dare I even say monthly!) to improve efficiency, morale, engagement and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/performance-appraisals\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2-way feedback<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"2-allowing-lateness-to-become-part-of-the-norm\"><strong>2.\u00a0Allowing lateness to become part of the norm<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>We all know the saying, \u2018<em>from little things big things grow<\/em>\u2019. Well lateness is one of those.<\/p>\n<p>Staff members will always try to push the boundaries. As the business owner, it is important to nip this in the bud early. Set your expectations from the beginning in terms of your office working\u00a0hours and when people can take breaks at work.<\/p>\n<p>Of course unavoidable lateness occurs from time to time but where it is becoming regular, then take the opportunity to reinforce what is expected of the individual team member.<\/p>\n<p>Lay the ground rules early. It\u2019s far easier to correct a behaviour getting out of hand sooner rather than later. All too often the staff member will say, \u201c<em>but you haven\u2019t said anything for 3 months so why is it\u00a0a problem for you now?<\/em>\u201d The same can be said for returning late from scheduled breaks. As the pattern of repeatedly returning late from a lunch break\u00a0occurs, be sure to have a quick word and correct the behaviour immediately.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;<em>Correct early and praise often<\/em>&#8221; is a good management paradigm.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"3-lack-of-adequate-candidate-screening-for-interviews\"><strong>3.\u00a0Lack of adequate candidate screening\u00a0for interviews<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>A friend of mine recently told me that for\u00a0the role he was recruiting for the candidates had to have 2 specific capabilities and without those capabilities they\u00a0would not even be considered\u00a0for the role.<\/p>\n<p>His PA organised the interviews for the shortlisted candidates and within the first 5 minutes he realised the candidate didn\u2019t have the capabilities required. However, being a nice guy, he stayed in the interview for half an hour.<\/p>\n<p>Later that day his phone call to me was a rant that he had wasted so much time speaking to people that he thought were ok, but weren\u2019t. My advice was to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.zippia.com\/employer\/7-essential-questions-to-help-make-the-most-out-of-every-phone-interview\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">telephone screen<\/a> initially with some set questions for his PA to ask otherwise he would go through the same thing over and over again.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"4-not-acting-quickly-enough-around-bullying-and-harassment\">4. Not acting quickly enough around\u00a0bullying and harassment<\/h2>\n<p>I am often asked to investigate bullying and harassment complaints or grievances in the workplace.<\/p>\n<p>A complaint is made and the manager or person in charge of the complaint sits on it. One week then becomes two before they decide to start an investigation.<\/p>\n<p>Why did they wait? Did they think the behaviour would now stop or did they hope it would go away, or worse, that they had too much work on to address the issue immediately?<\/p>\n<p>Where specific complaints of this nature are raised, DON\u2019T WAIT. As an employer you have a duty of care to prevent behaviour that causes a risk to the health and safety of everyone\u00a0in your workplace. By waiting you may be allowing this risk to continue.<\/p>\n<p>This is also of particular importance especially if the complaint leads to a termination and more risk is presented for the organisation by having waited to act on the complaint in a timely manner.<\/p>\n<h2 id=\"5-not-having-sufficient-policies-and-procedures-in-place\"><strong>5. Not having sufficient policies\u00a0and procedures in place<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>I remember at school\u00a0we had to know the school rules &#8211; \u00a0what was in and what was out.<\/p>\n<p>Well, similarly the best workplaces have a similar structure in place.<\/p>\n<p>The best way to do this is through a comprehensive set of policies and procedures. For the business owner it is worth investing in setting out a clear staff handbook for all employees to know understand the way things are done in your workplace.
