About the Program: In 2010, Richmond Area Multi-Services, Inc. and San Francisco State University jointly developed the Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Program. Funded by the Mental Health Services Act (MHSA), the primary goal of the Certificate program is to prepare individuals (or their family members) with lived experience with community behavioral health services with the basic skills and knowledge for peer specialist/counseling roles in the system of care. The course also provides students with training and opportunities to further their career in the behavioral health field.The Program consists of a 12-week Peer Certificate Entry Course, 8-week Peer Certificate Advanced Course, and a monthly training series called Leadership Academy. In 2022, the Entry Course became an approved Medi-Cal Peer Support Specialist Certification curriculum. Additionally, Leadership Academy and the Advanced Course offer continuing education units for state-certified Peer Support Specialists. Essential Responsibilities include: Serve as the primary instructor, administrator, and coordinator for guest lecturers in the 8-week Peer Certificate Advanced Course, which takes place in-person twice a year (Jan.-March Winter cohort and June-August Summer cohort). Sample topics may include motivational interviewing, systems of oppression and their impacts on client care, advocacy in the behavioral health field, street-based outreach practices, crisis intervention, and addressing provider burnout. Coordinate the Leadership Academy series; a once-monthly virtual two-to-three-hour continuing education series for people providing or interested in providing peer support services in the behavioral health field in San Francisco. Recruit and maintain relationships with guest lecturers and support the curriculum development of innovative and relevant training topics. Facilitate lessons on relevant peer counseling topics as needed for the Peer Specialist Mental Health Certificate Entry Course (to be cross-trained by Program Manager). Sample topics may include strengths-based interventions, suicide prevention, cultural humility & competence, case management & outreach, and others, to be determined based on program needs with the Associate Director of Training. Provide program coverage assistance with classroom instruction when Associate Director or guest lecturers are unavailable.
