When you think of Encinitas you can not help but think about water, yet because the first reliable fresh water supply was not piped in until 1961, there were many dry years when livestock and orchards withered from thirst within view of the Pacific Ocean.
Incorporated in 1986, the city brought together the communities of New Encinitas, Old Encinitas, Cardiff-by-the-Sea, Olivenhain and Leucadia to create a single city rich in history and steeped in tradition.
