The ideal candidate will be a seasoned professional with deep expertise in managing HERS ratings for multifamily projects from schematic design through to final certification.

Key Responsibilities
Field Work and Construction Support
Conduct on-site inspections, verifications, and diagnostic testing (including unit and building blower door and duct leakage testing) in accordance with RESNET standards and green program requirements including Energy Star, LEED, EGC, and Phius;
Prepare timely site visit reports, and participate in contractor briefings and trainings;
Communicate effectively with site superintendents and subcontractors to provide clear guidance, identify potential issues, ensure proper implementation of green program principles, and minimize performance failures;
Troubleshoot issues that arise during construction and provide actionable solutions to keep projects on track.
Building Performance Analysis
Complete plan take-offs and prepare energy models using Ekotrope software;
Update plans with testing and verification results and respond to QA provider questions.
Documentation & Reporting
Perform plan reviews for program compliance and general constructibility;
Prepare, organize, and submit all necessary documentation for HERS ratings, ENERGY STAR, LEED, EGC, Phius and other applicable certifications.
Project Management
Manage a portfolio of multifamily HERS rating projects, serving as the primary point of contact for construction teams;
Collaborate with NEI's project managers and engineers to establish energy efficiency strategies and ensure project goals are met;
Manage project timelines, budgets, and deliverables to meet strict deadlines;
Stay current with evolving energy codes, building science best practices, and certification program updates;
Provide mentorship and training to junior staff including RFIs and Rater trainees.
Qualifications
Required Qualifications
Minimum of five (5) years of demonstrated experience managing HERS ratings specifically for multifamily buildings;
ENERGY STAR Multifamily New Construction Verifier certification;
Certified Phius Verifier certification;
Proven track record of successfully guiding projects through all development phases;
HERS Multifamily Certification from an accredited HERS Rating Provider in good standing;
High proficiency in reading and interpreting architectural plans and specifications;
Expert proficiency with Ekotrope energy modeling software specifically on multifamily projects;
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts to both technical and non-technical audiences;
Strong organizational and time-management skills with the ability to work independently and manage multiple projects simultaneously;
A valid driver's license and the ability to travel to project sites as needed;

About this Position
The Senior Energy Consultant - Auditing is responsible for guiding Energy Analyst 1 and 2 Auditing team members in delivering high-quality energy, decarbonization, and water audits - including utility analyses, site visit and efficiency measure development, overseeing analysis and costing approaches, developing complex project deliverables that effectively communicate results and next steps to stakeholders, providing strategic consulting to help clients achieve energy and water efficiency and carbon reduction goals, and supporting business development initiatives. The Senior Energy Consultant will oversee and execute complex projects at both building and portfolio scales, mentor team members, and establish long-term client relationships.
This position will engage in impactful work, particularly on more complex project types (e.g., district-scale, campus-scale, net zero pursuits, decarbonization collaborations, etc.) including ENERGY STAR benchmarking, energy auditing, and decarbonization studies.
These services will align with projects seeking LEED O+M certification, Building Performance Standards compliance (Washington, Seattle, Oregon, Los Angeles, New York City, etc.), net zero and decarbonization studies, campus energy master planning, and energy efficiency measure implementations.
Reporting directly to a Service/Practice Lead, the Senior Energy Consultant will play a key role in connecting with and supporting other Brightworks practices by addressing their business needs, ensuring seamless collaboration across teams, and seeking out cross-practice business development opportunities.
Essential Duties For This Role
Collaborate with Service/Practice Lead to enhance, grow, and diversify Brightworks' auditing services.
Review utility bills, building automation system trend data, and drawing sets (architectural, mechanical, electrical, plumbing, controls, landscaping, etc.) to identify energy, water, and carbon efficiency-related opportunities.
Perform ASHRAE Level 1 and 2 energy, water, and decarbonization audits.
Develop specific low-cost and capital recommendations for existing buildings, including optimizing, retrofitting, and/upgrading building systems identified in ASHRAE 211 (mechanical, electrical, lighting, plumbing, landscaping, building automation system control strategies, renewable energy, envelope, etc.) plus electrification, central plants, and heat recovery systems.
Coordinate with Energy Modeling Analysts conducting building energy analyses within a range of building sizes and types, including district and central plant systems, multifamily residential, office, higher ed, and healthcare. Perform QA/QC as part of energy audit oversight, including assumptions, interactive effects, and results.
Create detailed reports with actionable recommendations for energy/water/decarbonization efficiency/conservation measures, including life-cycle cost analysis (LCCA) and return on investment/payback calculations.
Collaborate with clients and internal teams to communicate findings, recommendations, and project progress.
Manage multi-discipline sub-contractors in executing audits and engineering feasibility studies, as well as cost estimating.
Design and assign work for others. Provide timely, constructive feedback. Support the growth of direct reports and mentees towards independence. Allow mistakes without allowing failures.
Support and provide development of proposal content and other business development efforts, as needed.
Keep abreast of the latest advancements, equipment, and technologies for energy and water efficiency and decarbonization; share knowledge with the rest of the staff.
Keep abreast of the latest in utility, state, and other incentive eligibility, documentation, and process.
Specific Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
Possesses a thorough in-depth understanding of mechanical, electrical, lighting, plumbing, renewable energy, and landscaping systems; building automation/management systems and control strategies; electrification; building envelope; and energy and water usage patterns.
Ability to analyze interval utility data and BMS trend data, create compelling illustrative charts/graphics, identify operational trends, and draw and communicate conclusions to inform strategic client decisions.
Advanced expertise in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint required. Working knowledge of Tableau, PowerBI, or other graphing software preferred.
Working knowledge and ability to implement the requirements of relevant codes and standards, including ASHRAE Standards 211, 36, and 100. Familiarity with ASHRAE Standards 180, 228, and 14; Building Performance Standards in multiple jurisdictions (WA, OR, Seattle, NYC, LA); and ISO 50001 preferred.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills for report writing, presentations, and client interaction, especially with complex, technical topics. Experience using equipment like airflow and temperature sensors, infrared cameras, and data loggers preferred.

This individual will work directly and indirectly with property managers, board members, and building staff in Virginia, District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, and North Carolina to advise on many aspects relates to reducing energy consumption, utility costs, and greenhouse gas emissions.
Roles and Responsibilities:
* Serve as a regional subject matter expert for energy and climate related questions.
* Analyze building utility price structure and consumption data (electricity, natural gas, water) for trends and anomalies.
* Perform building walk-throughs as needed, recommend energy and water efficiency upgrades and low-cost/no-cost operational improvements.

Skills and qualifications:
* Hold one or more energy-related certifications: CEM, EBCP, CBCP, LEED O&M.
* Undergraduate Degree in Engineering, Sustainability, or another related field.
* 10+ years' experience working in building science, sustainability, energy auditing/consulting.
* Very familiar with basic and advanced building mechanical systems used in multifamily buildings (boilers, chillers, cooling towers, PTACs, thermal and DHW distribution systems, BAS, Heat Pumps, Distributed Generation).
* Able to travel to buildings in the region as needed to conduct fieldwork and attend meetings.
