SP Plus enforcement officer job description

Pay Rate: $15.75 - $17.50 per hour

Schedule is as follows:

Monday's Off, Tuesday - Sunday 12:00 AM - 5:00 AM or

Monday & Wednesday 8:00 AM - 6:00 PM, Tueday, Thursday, Friday & Saturday 1:00 PM - 6:00 PM.

Basic Function - Monitor designated streets, lots, garages, other public areas and/or an entire campus to ensure compliance with parking policies.

Responsibilities

* Provide customer service by answering questions regarding directions, events, building locations and parking policies.
* Issue citations and warnings for non-compliance with a computerized hand held computer or manual tickets. Impound, boot or relocate vehicles as directed.
* This position requires the ability to work alone and therefore must exercise proper judgment, tact and diplomacy in dealing with people.
* Assist maintenance staff with duties related to parking equipment and facility upkeep and maintenance. This includes but is not limited to: inspecting and assessing lots for maintenance issues, painting, cleaning and repairing parking meters and pay and display machines, installing signs, sign posts and meter posts.
* Assist in the collection and security of all monies received through parking meters, multi-space machines , pay on foot technology and any other means of collecting parking revenues and fees.
* Assist event staff with activities related to parking for events. This includes but is not limited to: setting up for events, traffic control, receipt of payment for parking, and lot usage control.
* Assist office staff with activities related to permit sales during peak seasons. This includes but is not limited to data entry, collating mailings, providing frontline customer service.
* Other related duties as assigned.
* Please note that Enforcement Officers are not sworn police officers and have no arresting authority.

Qualifications

Qualification Requirements: The personnel selected for parking enforcement officer positions must have certain traits and abilities that enable them to achieve expected levels of performance. Some of the most important competencies are exercising sound independent judgment and maintaining a high level of customer service. Other areas include:

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; talk and listen. Employees are regularly exposed to outside weather conditions including snow storms, and extreme heat.

About the Indiana Department of Homeland Security:

The Indiana Department of Homeland Security (IDHS) leads Indiana's emergency planning and operations, first responder training and fire and building safety. The Indiana State Fire Marshal leads the Division of Fire and Building Safety (within IDHS), which oversees the enforcement of building codes and includes a fire investigations unit. The agency certifies and trains thousands of first responders and also hosts state-level exercises each year. IDHS also supports the state Emergency Operations Center (EOC), which leads response and coordination efforts for large-magnitude incidents.

Salary Statement:

This position traditionally starts at $34,320 per year and may be commensurate with education and work experience.

About the Job:

As the Enforcement Certification Code Official, you will be responsible for serving as a senior level fire & building inspector for the Code Enforcement section of the Division of Fire and Building Safety, of the Department of Homeland Security. In this position, you are responsible for conducting field inspections and interpreting code to ensure compliance with applicable codes, standards, laws, rules, and regulations as they pertain to building construction and Class I structures.

A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this role are as follows:

* Conduct field inspections of construction activity for Class 1 structures, to determine compliance with appropriate codes laws, rules, and regulations.
* Interpret and issue inspection reports/ violations regarding various fire and building codes, standards, laws, rules, and regulations.
* Perform damage assessment inspections following natural or man-made disasters to assess affected buildings for safe entry.
* Issue appropriate inspection orders of code deficiencies, in tandem with local enforcement authority. May issue fire watches and prepare orders for closure of buildings that pose a severe threat to human life/safety.
* Enter detailed inspection results and code interpretation on a field computer into an established database management system.
* Explain and provide education on the various fire and building codes and their applicability to architects, engineers, local and fire building officials, contractors, manufacturers, property owners, and/or other staff members.
* Prepare correspondence and technical reports to explain fire and building code revisions, policies, etc. and answers general code inquiries.
* Investigate and resolve complaints or refers complaints to appropriate level.
* Keep abreast of changes in codes, standards, laws, rules, regulations, and procedures as they relate to all facets of job duties.
* Provide training and education opportunities for local fire and building official through classes and field instruction.
* Provide code related field, administrative, and policy training of new inspection staff, providing code education and specific on-the-job training.

What You'll Need for Success:

You must meet the following requirements to be considered for employment:

* Must have a High School Diploma or High School Equivalent (HSE).
* Have two (2) years of experience as a code official four (4) for the Indiana Department of Homeland Security.
* Must possess an International Code Council (ICC) certification as a Commercial Building Inspector and Commercial Fire Inspector.
* Working knowledge of a database systems and MS Office applications.
* Must be able to solve practical problems with tact, diplomacy, and deal with a variety of people in a variety of situations.
* Extensive knowledge of both construction and fire principles, practices, and procedures.
* Extensive ability to interpret construction drawings and specifications; possess knowledge of applicable building codes; and an ability to create accurate and concise written reports.
* Extensive ability to interpret the State's fire and building codes, standards, laws, rules, and regulations and apply them to inspection practices similar to a Code Official 4.
* Effective communication skills to both internal and external customers.
* During weather events and other emergency situations, inspectors are required to be available to conduct Emergency Damage Assessments across the State in partnership with the Response and Recovery Division, which also may require overnights.
* Must have and retain a valid Indiana Driver's license and the ability to operate a State vehicle is required.

This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
