SMC is actively looking for Mid-Level Mechanical Engineer/Designer to execute mechanical design for mission critical projects. Typical project types may include design of greenfield and brownfield data center facilities, design of fit-out packages for hyperscale and enterprise clients of colocation providers, data center campus planning, conceptual designs and feasibility studies, and various system calculations. This candidate shall be capable of executing basic mechanical design projects independently, taking established design criteria through generation of design plans and specifications for permitting and construction. The candidate shall also be capable as serving as a key contributor in part of a larger mechanical design team on large and/or complex mission critical projects under the guidance of a senior engineer. The mechanical design scope will be a part of a broader project and therefore this candidate should be capable of interfacing with design leads within SMC (electrical, telecommunications, fire protection, plumbing) as well as externally including architectural, civil, structural, etc. The ideal candidate will be comfortable mentoring recent graduates and junior designers and engineers, reviewing the work of others, and collaborating with senior engineers to implement broad project goals. RESPONSIBILITIES This candidate will have the opportunity to execute mechanical design of various project types while working and coordinating with clients and design leads from all disciplines, as well as serve as the daily lead on smaller projects. This candidate shall have the ability to communicate effectively with co-workers and with clients while being able to meet scheduled project deadlines. Responsibilities include but are not limited to: Utilize Autodesk Revit to produce detailed design documents. Perform airside and hydronic calculations for multiple mechanical systems. Minimum 4 years of experience in facility HVAC design, particularly using Autodesk Revit for drawing development. Experience in mechanical design for larger industrial and commercial buildings is preferred, with experience in mission critical design a plus. Experience working across the entire construction process, from schematic design through construction administration, including review of submittals and shop drawings, and field work such as existing condition surveys, site observations, and punch lists. Experience leading small mechanical design teams and having some client interface experience is preferred. Experience using construction management tools such as Procore and Autodesk Construction Cloud. Basic understanding of controls for mechanical systems is a plus. Engineer-in-Training (EIT) or Professional Engineer (PE) preferred. LOCATION This position will begin as remote, with plans to transition to a hybrid role as we continue to grow. We anticipate establishing offices in both the Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth metro areas in the near future, at which point it will become a hybrid role. Reviewing drawings, models, engineering specifications, orders, and related information to obtain knowledge of manufacturing methods, procedures and activities. Establishment of sequences of operations to fabricate and assemble composite products that promote efficient utilization of equipment and labor. Implementing and improving new manufacturing processes. Experience in establishing qualification plans, in order to qualify processes and equipment to the customer specifications. Capable of designing or defining the requirements for the development of equipment, robotics, Lay-up molds, Vacuum Holding Fixtures, Shop Aids, Positioning fixtures, Go-No-Go inspection tools required for the manufacturing of new products. Capable of performing safety, failure mode and effects analysis (FMEA), Process Capability and Total Product Maintenance (TPM) for new and existing equipment. Understanding basic industrial engineering practices, such as, time studies, statistical analysis, ergonomic impacts, and value engineering principals. Bachelor's Degree in Manufacturing or Mechanical Engineering or related field. Experience with Catia V5, Inventor, Solid Works, or other 3-Dimensional CADs required. Skilled in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project. ERP system experience Preferred Qualifications Composite part fabrication experience. Experience with composite process and specifications of thermoset and/or thermoplastic parts and structures. Ply shape flat pattern development. Tool Design experience. Knowledge of Boeing and Airbus process and specifications. Familiar with composite autoclave or oven curing cycles, thermal profiles, recipes, thermal effects, thermal expansion, wrinkles and tooling spring back effects. Five to Seven years of aerospace engineering preferred.
