Position Summary AirJoule is seeking a Product Development Engineer to join the application engineering team, which focuses on optimization of device performance and understanding its performance landscape. AirJoule technology dehumidifies air with record-breaking energy efficiency, and then converts it into pure water. The role of the Product Development Engineer is essential for success of the technology, because it connects basic R&D to real-world performance. This role will involve running the assembled prototypes, automation of subcomponent technologies within AirJoule , and collecting performance data over a wide range of conditions. The role will also involve modeling of prototype performance and generation of experimental data to validate the model. This assignment will be located at AirJoule's headquarters in Newark, DE. The Applications Engineer should be familiar with running complex mechanical systems, controlling systems with automation software such as Labview, and developing software-based models of chemical and mechanical systems. Key Responsibilities To perform in this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each key responsibility satisfactorily. Act as an operator of AirJoule prototypes, including running the device, performing maintenance, QC testing, performing FMEA analysis, and troubleshooting problems that occur with the device. Work with the Applications Engineering Team to design testing campaigns with Design-of-Experiment methods, execute them with sufficient experimental rigor, compile the results and perform statistical analysis, and communicate results. Interpretation and analysis of data collected on performance of AirJoule systems. Modeling of chemical and physical processes within AirJoule systems using ASPEN, DWSIM, Matlab, COMSOL or related software. Implementation and evaluation of supporting technologies which enable AirJoule field deployments at customer sites. This will include travel to customer sites. Document experimental results in the form of PowerPoint presentations, technical report documents, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) entries. Drive forward lab-based R&D efforts in support of product development. Coordinate efforts between the Applications Engineering and Design Engineering teams in order to optimize AirJoule sorption systems. This will include optimization of geometry, sizing, flowpath, adsorption kinetics as it pertains to AirJoule adsorbent-coated heat exchangers. Lead deployments of AirJoule systems at customer sites, including travel to customer sites, planning and coordination of deployment events, commissioning of said systems, and analysis of the resulting data. Lead efforts to design and implement supporting infrastructure for AirJoule prototypes, such as power sources, heat exchangers, communications systems, and transportation containers. Act as a mentor to junior employees and help provide development opportunities and support. Work with the Applications Engineering Team to design testing campaigns with Design-of-Experiment methods, execute them with sufficient experimental rigor, compile and communicate results. Develop models/simulations for AirJoule systems, interactions with environments, and AirJoule adsorption subcomponents. Software such as ASPEN, Matlab, COMSOL, DWSIM, Solidworks, etc… may be utilized. Document experimental results in the form of PowerPoint presentations, technical report documents, standard operating procedures (SOPs), and electronic laboratory notebook (ELN) entries. Education and Experience Requirements Minimum Education: Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Chemistry, Material Science, or related field required. Master's or PhD preferred. Minimum Experience: 8+ (post BS degree), 6+ (post MS degree), or 3+ (post PhD degree). Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Technical leadership, especially with respect to product development or commissioning of large systems Experience with running multicomponent mechanical and/or chemical systems, such as ‘rigs', reactors, automotives, technical prototypes, etc… including knowledge of safe operating methods. Experience with either sorption, filtration, ion exchange, catalysis (heterogeneous), or HVAC systems is preferred. Strong fundamental understanding of adsorption processes, mass transport, thermodynamics and heat flow, etc… Basic understanding of mechanical systems, especially heat exchangers, pumps, fans, motors and condensers.
