The Mechanical & Plumbing Engineer provides technical leadership, design services, and engineering coordination in support of estimating, preconstruction, project management, detailing, fabrication, and field operations. DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
1. Design cost-effective, energy-efficient mechanical and plumbing systems that meet client requirements, budget constraints, and company standards.
2. Provide complete, code-compliant system layouts, drawings, specifications, and engineering narratives for all project delivery methods.
3. Perform system calculations including loads, sizing, pressure drops, and energy analysis.
4. Maintain current knowledge of applicable mechanical, plumbing, energy, and building codes, including AHJ requirements.
5. Participate in energy evaluations, payback analyses, and sustainability initiatives (including LEED support where applicable).
6. Support estimating with design-build concepts, system layouts, technical clarifications, and engineering narratives.
7. Review plans and specifications for scope completeness, constructability, risks, and opportunities.
8. Review and validate proposed substitutions and “equals” prior to bid submission and document approved alternatives.
9. Assist estimating and project management with obtaining complete, compliant mechanical equipment quotes, including coordination with manufacturers' representatives.
10. Maintain a clear understanding of project scope, estimated cost, design budget, risks, and optimization opportunities.
11. Collaborate with detailing, fabrication, and field teams to ensure constructability and early system optimization.
12. Participate in project kickoff meetings, coordination meetings, and strategic planning sessions.
13. Provide technical support to project management and detailing teams on both design-build and plan/spec projects, including drawing interpretation and RFI production and review.
14. Participate in and oversee system optimization efforts throughout construction.
15. Support PlanGrid (or equivalent platform) population and maintenance in accordance with company procedures.
16. Prepare permit-ready, budget-compliant design drawings and documentation for design-build and special projects.
17. Coordinate with AHJs to obtain permits and resolve permitting issues, including in-person permit acquisition when required.
18. Support inspections and address code or compliance comments as necessary.
19. Develop and maintain professional working relationships with clients, vendors, suppliers, subcontractors, unions, and AHJs.
20. Manage external engineering and detailing resources when outsourced, including defining scope, schedule, and deliverables in coordination with project management.
21. Support equipment procurement and technical coordination throughout the project lifecycle.
22. Maintain and update company mechanical, plumbing, and engineering standards and specifications.
23. Participate in the annual refresh of company construction and design standards.
24. Apply lessons learned from completed projects to improve future designs and processes.
25. Collaborate across departments to continuously improve design quality, constructability, and efficiency.
26. Maintain professional conduct and effective communication with all internal and external stakeholders.

The Role
As a Mechanical Engineer, you will be responsible for providing engineering inputs integral to both small and large-scale hydro and dam projects. You will lead technical teams and mentor junior staff, support production, and coordinate delivery of engineering work products with multi-disciplinary project team members and external stakeholders. You will not only support and help grow the broader engineering team capabilities, but your particular focus will be on continuing the development of our hydropower capabilities and working with key staff in growing the business.
You'll also be involved in supporting project management duties, coordinating with internal and external clients as well as assisting with guiding and mentoring other engineers within the team. In this role you will lead teams conducting technical work involving turbines, generators, and their associated ancillary systems, as well as other balance of plant systems such as gates, hoists, cranes, pumping systems, lubrication systems, and other critical equipment at hydroelectric powerplants. You will lead teams conducting technical work for feasibility studies, engineering designs, preparation of construction drawings and specifications, and carrying out site visits and inspections. You will be working in a collaborative environment with a great team of engineers, technicians, scientists, and other industry-leading peers, and you will also interface directly with clients.
Key Responsibilities:
Design modifications to, or entirely new, mechanical systems related to dams, control structures, water retaining structures, and hydroelectric generating stations.
Execute multiple projects from the proposal stage through to completion. Projects will include a variety of small to large projects involving water resources, flood control, and hydroelectric sectors.
Conduct site investigations, condition assessments, and provide design and construction support.
Mechanical engineering design and refurbishment of cranes, hoists, hydroelectric turbines, generators, and other balance of plant systems.
Conduct feasibility studies for proposed designs and assess costs and benefits for alternatives in a systematic and thorough manner.
Preparation and review of reports.
Work collaboratively with other disciplines to execute project deliverables, as well as ensure that quality objectives, schedules, and budgets are met.
Edit and prepare design specifications.
Contribute to the development of the hydro-mechanical practice at KGS by assisting the US mechanical design lead by documenting technical knowledge, improving internal production processes, coordinating and developing internal training content, and other tasks.

About You
To fill the role, we're looking for an applicant to bring forward a good mix of qualifications and previous experiences. Some highlights should include:
Minimum of a Bachelor of Science (BS) in Mechanical Engineering from an ABET accredited university. A post-graduate degree would be an asset.
Minimum of 7-15 years of experience in mechanical engineering.
Must be registered as a Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Washington, Oregon, or California, as well as eligible for registration as a professional engineer in other states by comity through NCEES; or, if not already registered as a PE, would be able to obtain licensure within 1 year from date of hire.
Previous consulting experience is preferred, but not required.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills are required.
Must be self-motivated, and able to work independently with minimal supervision and manage several projects simultaneously.
Travel to project sites is usually limited but will be required at times depending on project/client requirements. The amount of travel time desired by our employees can usually be accommodated.

How Will You Make an Impact?
Interns at Brown and Caldwell make a daily, material impact by completing support duties to advance their team's projects and objectives. They receive professional training and the support of their team. Interns can expect to be onboarded, mentored, and developed by industry leaders to develop real-life skills and make an impact on their assigned projects.
As a Summer Intern, you can expect your experience to include the following:
* Collaborate closely with project managers, engineers, designers, and BIM leads to execute work on water and wastewater treatment and conveyance infrastructure projects.
* Assist in the preparation of engineering and design deliverables including drawings, specifications, technical memoranda, reports, schedules, and figures.
* Communicate effectively and coordinate with multidisciplinary project teams (e.g., drafters, designers, engineers).
* Perform edits and updates in Revit and AutoCAD models based on engineering changes and markups.
* Participate in the full project lifecycle, including design, documentation, and construction support.
* Conduct field work such as site investigations and construction observations as needed.
* Support data-related tasks including entry, analysis, visualization, and documentation to inform design decisions.
* Check design deliverables for consistency, readability, and adherence to standards and specifications.
* Provide engineering services during construction, including performance checks and conformity assessments.
* Manage and deliver assignments on time, demonstrating strong organizational and time management skills.
* Complete an Internship Capstone project demonstrating skill development, learning, and accomplishments gained during the summer internship experience.
Work schedule and location: Summer Interns with Brown and Caldwell work a full-time schedule of 40 hours a week and may have the potential for hybrid work schedules and fieldwork
Desired Skills and Experience:
What Must Our Candidate Have? (Required)
* To qualify for an internship, you must be enrolled as a student seeking a degree in engineering (Structural Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or a related field), science, geology, or a related field.
* You must be enrolled for the 2025-2026 academic year and plan to continue in Fall 2026.
* You also must maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale.
Salary Range: The hourly pay range for this position is based on the employee's primary work location and may be more or less depending upon skills, experience, and education. These ranges may be modified in the future.

Location B:
Hourly $20.20 - $27.70
Location C:
Hourly $22.00 - $30.20

Job Summary
Sundt is looking for committed engineering (Civil, Structural, and Mechanical) and construction management students within accredited Universities/colleges. The internship will provide you with unique experiences on challenging projects throughout the US while providing you the opportunity to participate in several of the activities it takes to successfully build our projects. Key Responsibilities
