The intern will be responsible for tasks associated with handling, segregating, packing, and inspecting chemical waste. This position will work both indoors and outdoors at plants, labs, and customer sites assisting with lab packs, household hazardous waste (HHW) collections and lab moves. Students will have the opportunity to shadow other positions within the Company. Interns can expect to participate in networking events and complete a final presentation at the conclusion of the program. POSITION SUMMARY:
Support development and implementation of train control projects, with emphasis on Positive Train Control (PTC) systems. This position will participate in design, construction and commissioning planning and review meetings. This position supports maintaining configuration control of train control hardware and software designs. This position supports technical staff for the C&S Department and their staff upon request.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Support division and production C&S forces in implementation of modifications to Amtrak's train control system and addressing technical issues.
* Provide support for signal installation work to ensure that new systems are properly tested before being placed into service; develop and review test plans and procedures to ensure that production and division forces complete all necessary testing and documentation; attend field cutovers; and ensure any field changes are documented in as-in-service documentation.
* Support configuration management process to ensure train control design files, databases, software, etc. are current and properly maintained.
* Must be capable of managing solutions to individual train control design problems, providing direction to train control, maintenance, and production staff, and managing staff and consultant train control design staff.
* Maintain documentation of all comments for design and implementation plans, both internal and external.
* Assist in the development of the C&S department's annual capital and maintenance programs.
* Supports development of signal maintenance practices, procedures, and inspections through maintenance of AMT-23, AMT-27, and other C&S manuals.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
* Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Engineering.
* Must have at least 3 years of academic undergraduate studies completed or a senior status at minimum.
* Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Pursuit of master's degree in engineering

* Knowledge of railroad operations, construction and maintenance practices.

Your Impact

The purpose of this position is to attract new engineers into Amtrak's Engineering Track Department, providing an entry point for students pursuing a Bachelor of Science in Engineering degree from an accredited university. Candidates for the position will have the opportunity to apply their engineering skills in both the office and field and to gain firsthand work experience in the various aspects of railway engineering, particularly as it relates to maintaining and constructing track infrastructure.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
* Rotate through various sub-groups of the Track Department.
* Assist Track Standards group with standards, specifications, and vendor design reviews.
* Assist Track Design group with track layouts and design plan reviews.
* Assist Track Clearances, Inspection, and Testing group with track geometry testing, curve modification design, and capital maintenance planning.
* Assist Survey group with on-track survey operations.
* Attend office meetings, field meetings, and conference calls.
* Assist in the management and supervision of engineering resources in the field such as rail grinding, Sperry car testing, concrete tie inspection, and vegetation control.
* Assist in providing technical, logistical, and administrative support to ensure the successful completion of assigned project tasks within scope, schedule, and budget.
* Receive instruction on and become familiar with Engineering safety standards, work procedures, and operating practices.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
* Must be actively pursuing a degree at an accredited educational institution.
* Must be actively pursuing an undergraduate degree in Civil or Mechanical Engineering, or similar field.
* Must have at least 1 year of academic undergraduate studies completed or a sophomore status at minimum.
* Must have a cumulative GPA of 2.8 or higher.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
* Prior work experience in design, maintenance, or construction.
* Previous construction or railroad industry experience.
* Specific interest or desire to work in the railroad industry.
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
* Working knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite.
* Some experience with CAD software (MicroStation and/or AutoCAD)
COMMUNICATIONS AND INTERPERSONAL SKILLS:
Must have excellent oral and written communication skills.
The hourly range is $17.50 per hour - $35.00 per hour. Pay is based on factors including school year, program of study, etc. In addition, paid internships include Amtrak rail pass privileges as a part of the experience along with one (1) PTO day per academic year.
Summer 2025 internship program will run from May 19th - August 8, 2025.

What You'll Be Working On
Support real client projects by participating in the planning, design, and construction administration of water, wastewater, and municipal infrastructure projects.

Support preparation of reports, design plans, specifications, and cost estimates.
Assist in reviewing subdivision, land development, grading, and zoning plans, including stormwater management and erosion control.
Aid in preparing permit applications for federal, state, and local agencies.
Minimum Qualifications
Enrolled in an ABET-accredited undergraduate or graduate program in Civil, Mechanical, or Environmental Engineering.
Demonstrated interested in water resources through prior internships or applied academic coursework.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to work in the field and contribute to project teams.
Proficiency in AutoCAD and Microsoft Office Suite.
Preferred Qualifications
Familiarity with BIM, Civil 3D, GIS, hydraulic/hydrologic modeling, and other specialty engineering software.
Experience with municipal and private utilities is a plus.

The Engineering Intern is a college student in an accredited BSCE program. This individual will assist in the design of a variety of municipal or infrastructure projects (owned by municipalities and/or local school districts). Such projects shall include roads, underground utilities, public buildings, recreational facilities, and parking facilities.
PRIMARY DUTIES:
· Develop or implement engineering solutions to assist clients with improving and maintaining their infrastructure.
- Design transportation, utility, facility, or hydraulic systems or structures (as appropriate) using computer assisted design or drawing tools.
- Compute load and grade requirements, water flow rates, or material stress factors to determine design specifications.
- Estimate quantities and cost of materials, equipment, or labor to determine project feasibility.
- Analyze survey reports, maps, drawings, blueprints, aerial photography, or other topographical or geologic data.
- Conduct studies of traffic patterns or environmental conditions to identify engineering problems and assess potential project impact.
- Perform all design activities ensuring compliance with environmental, safety, or other governmental regulations.
- Prepare public reports on topics such as bid proposals, project status reports and design criteria reports.
- Support of the field activities of project construction inspection staff, relating to design criteria, value engineering or changing site conditions.
