General Information:
Founded in 2022, the American Political Reform & Innovation Lab (APRILab) in the College of Arts and Letters is a nonpartisan, civic- and community-engaged political science and data science research lab. APRILab produces original, evidence-based research on institutional political reform in collaboration with internal and external social scientists and data scientists, and with leading experts in the national political reform advocacy community. The lab's research addresses significant, real-world problems posed by institutional dysfunction, democratic backsliding, and unequal political influence.
APRILab is seeking undergraduate and graduate lab associates to begin working in Fall 2022. The duties will require 5 to 20 hours per week depending on student qualifications, undergraduate or graduate status, and scheduling needs. This is a minimum one-semester appointment, with preference given to students who anticipate being eligible to continue for the full academic year and who have an interest in continuing one or more additional years. Students who identify themselves as a member of a traditionally marginalized population are especially encouraged to apply.
Duties and Responsibilities:
1. Conduct data collection, data cleaning, database management, and reporting tasks for multiple, simultaneous political reform research projects;
2. Monitor progress on tasks and report activity to the supervising director and graduate assistant on a weekly basis;
3. Research background material and prepare copy for website, social media, grant proposals, research reports, working papers, and related public-facing media products;
4. Communicate effectively with faculty and staff colleagues, external faculty lab affiliates, collaborators, and political reform advocacy partners;
5. Work collaboratively and productively in a diverse work environment, while acknowledging and appreciating differences among colleagues and external engagement partners;
6. Commit to acting in a professional, nonpartisan manner when representing JMU and the APRILab;
7. Other reasonable tasks related to the lab's research objectives as assigned.
Qualifications:
Enrollment in and in excellent academic standing in an undergraduate or graduate program at James Madison University for the 2022-2023 academic year (see conditions of employment);
High level of intrinsic motivation, good time-management skills, and the ability to be independently productive and accountable to others;
Willingness to conduct independent research in collaboration with the lab director, internal and external collaborators, and political reform advocacy partners;
Strong set of organizational, writing, research, and editing skills with a high level of attention to detail;
Record of coursework in research methods, statistics, data science, or similar topics; and coursework in American politics, history, economics, or similar;
Demonstrated experience with Microsoft Office suite, Google Drive, LaTeX, Slack, or similar office software.
Additional Posting Information:
Experience with or coursework in technical writing, copy editing, proofreading, and/or producing alternative audio, visual, or marketing products;
Experience with or coursework in conducting social scientific, data visualization, or data science tasks, including data analysis in SPSS, Python, R, STATA, or related languages, and with Qualtrics or similar questionnaire software;
Familiarity with IRB protocols and human subjects research ethics;
Ambition to pursue advanced graduate education and/or a career in public service and public affairs, broadly defined.
Conditions of Employment:
Students must be degree-seeking students, enrolled on at least a half-time basis (6 credits for undergraduate and 5 credits for graduate).

Technical Tasks:
* Maintaining the health of our global fleet of robots through daily maintenance and repair tasks. Which can include but is not limited to - diagnosing unforeseen problems, troubleshooting equipment malfunctions, and repairing or replacing faulty equipment (tires, electronics, motors).
* Carrying out preventive maintenance activities and upgrades on robots and infrastructure. Monitoring and servicing our internal systems, running tests and completing reports, and completing updates or improvements to existing systems as appropriate.
* Perform root cause analysis to identify the causes of faults or problems and systematically develop a solution to prevent/solve underlying issues.
Operational Tasks:
* Accurately document all tasks/partner or internal messaging related to service concerns or robot-related issues using appropriate applications/tools.
* Maintain a clean and organized hub by performing accurate spare parts inventory audits twice a week and ensuring all tools are accounted for and returned to their proper location after use.
* Work with our engineering team to identify any potential improvements regarding robot health and design.

General Information:
The Facilities Management Engineering & Construction Department at James Madison University is seeking applicants for a part-time EngineeringTechnician. This position will work approximately 20-25 hours per week. The successful candidate will assist with a variety of geospatial and stormwater related duties including updating CAD and GIS based building floor plans and campus maps.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will also provide support to the University's stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and other environmental and sustainability programs by performing construction inspections for the University's Virginia Erosion and Stormwater Management Program (VESMP) compliance; performing required inspections on stormwater best management practices and storm system outfalls; and provide support for the University's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program. Other duties may be assigned as they relate to Facilities efforts to maintain and expand the geospatial, stormwater and sustainability related programs.

Role snapshot
Lead urgent repairs and uptime initiatives to keep production running at peak availability, speed, quality, and cost efficiency.
Own advanced troubleshooting across mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, electrical, and electronic domains.
Diagnose low/medium-voltage distribution (fuses, switchgear, breakers, transformers).
Interpret PLC ladder logic, schematics, and I/O; perform minor program adjustments and PLC troubleshooting.
Operate on industrial Ethernet networks; identify/log into PLC addresses; apply IP addressing fundamentals.
Resolve relay logic, VFD drives, and furnace control SCR challenges with data-driven problem solving.
Expertly use Multimeter, Oscilloscope, Megger, and standard hand tools.
Source and interpret manuals, drawings, and procedures from internal files, vendors, and online; produce clear sketches/diagrams to convey issues.
Advance reactive, preventive, and predictive maintenance programs; spearhead continuous improvement ideas.
Serve as a go-to expert on melting induction furnaces, sand mold machines, and air compressors.
Model safe, environmentally responsible work practices.
Qualifications
High school diploma or equivalent.
Associate degree in a technical discipline or 5+ years in industrial maintenance (Mechatronics certification/background preferred).
Demonstrated multi-craft, hands-on industrial equipment experience.
Preferred: stick welding; torch and plasma cutting; knowledge of mobile equipment operation.

Candidates must be currently pursuing a Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a construction-related field. Open to students who have successfully completed sophomore level classes and above.
The Engineering Intern provides technical support to construction staff under the supervision of the Project Manager, Project Engineer, and Superintendent. Other duties will include:
Coordinates project activities with direct supervision from Project Manager, Project Engineer, or Superintendent;
Performs project accounting and scheduling activities with assistance;
Performs estimating functions as requested with assistance;
Assists with development of work plans and quantity tracking;
Assists with construction layout when required and monitors quality;
Performs other duties as assigned.

General Information:
The Facilities Management Engineering & Construction Department at James Madison University is seeking applicants for a part-time EngineeringTechnician. This position will work approximately 20-25 hours per week. The successful candidate will assist with a variety of geospatial and stormwater related duties including updating CAD and GIS based building floor plans and campus maps.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This position will also provide support to the University's stormwater management, erosion and sediment control, and other environmental and sustainability programs by performing construction inspections for the University's Virginia Erosion and Stormwater Management Program (VESMP) compliance; performing required inspections on stormwater best management practices and storm system outfalls; and provide support for the University's Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) Program. Other duties may be assigned as they relate to Facilities efforts to maintain and expand the geospatial, stormwater and sustainability related programs.
