We are seeking a hands-on Engine Performance Technician to support engine testing, calibration, and performance development in our state-of-the-art test facilities. Position Summary The Engine Performance Technician will work closely with engineers to execute engine tests, collect and analyze data, configure instrumentation, and support control system and calibration development. This role is ideal for individuals with strong fundamentals in internal combustion engines, test cell operation, and engine data acquisition systems. Responsibilities * Set up, operate, and troubleshoot engine performance test cells for prototype and production engines. * Execute test plans involving durability testing, performance mapping, emissions measurement, and transient testing. * Assist with engine performance calibration, including feed-forward and closed-loop control strategies. * Perform mechanical setup, fixturing, and instrumentation of engines and test rigs. * Install and configure instrumentation to measure flow, temperatures, pressures, loads, and other performance-related parameters, including flow meters, thermocouples, RTDs, pressure transducers, load cells, and strain gauges. * Operate and troubleshoot high-speed data acquisition systems for combustion and performance data collection. * Validate sensor accuracy, wiring integrity, and signal quality. * Support development and implementation of ECU communication protocols such as CAN and XCP. * Assist in control software development and controller configuration. * Perform PID control tuning for actuators, fuel systems, airflow systems, and thermal control systems. * Use Matlab, Simulink, and Python for data analysis, test automation, and model-based development tasks. * Support PLC logic development for test cell automation, interlocks, and safety systems. Requirements * Understanding of internal combustion engine fundamentals, including thermodynamics, combustion, performance metrics, fueling, and air handling. * Experience with engine testing, dynamometers, or engine test cell operations. * Familiarity with ECU communication protocols such as CAN or XCP. * Experience with Matlab, Simulink, and Python for data analysis or controls work. * Ability to configure and troubleshoot engine instrumentation and high-speed data acquisition systems. * Understanding of control systems and PID tuning. * Ability to read wiring diagrams, assemble electrical harnesses, and diagnose electrical issues. * Strong mechanical aptitude and hands-on problem-solving skills. * Experience with PLC logic programming and automated test systems (preferred). * Experience with model-based calibration workflows or engine control development (preferred). * Experience working with prototype engines, R&D test environments, or advanced combustion systems (preferred). * Knowledge of safety practices for fuel systems and rotating machinery. This employee will be responsible for assembling, repairing, and modifying electronic equipment, parts, components, and systems. At times, manufacturing support may be required at the pace to meet the production schedule. The employee may also be responsible for inspection and electrical test activities. Responsibilities * Evaluate and test battery components and products. * Support Engineering in prototype development, board level and functional testing as needed, * Supporting requests within the Engineering team to make board patches and modifications, outside of standard soldering standards for prototypes. * Inspection of circuit boards to ensure quality and reliability of workmanship. * Management of components inventory for board assembly. * Set up and selection of tools suitable to perform the work. * Testing of boards or components according to written test procedures. * Support of procedure reviews with Engineering to improve/refine/develop testing and assembly processes. * Use of standard electronics equipment, such as DMMs, power supply, oscilloscopes, Modbus, and inspection tools. * Written and spoken communication with the team around work status and inventory needs. * Additional responsibilities may be assigned at any time based on department and business needs Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities * Ability to professionally solder both surface mount and through hole components. * Ability to read a Bill of Material parts list to identify locations of components to solder. * Knowledge of electronics components, such as directions and orientations to install components. * Experience with managing components during assembly work and supporting re-orders as needed to maintain supplies. * Capability to document work done and keep records for Quality Assurance. * Familiarity with ESD and soldering safety requirements. * Competency in reading and analyzing electrical diagrams and circuit schematics. * Support of electrical/circuit testing and technical troubleshooting required. * Experience with design and development support, like constructing and troubleshooting prototypes and first-piece builds. * Ability to aid engineering with design, review, and proofreading activities around new procedure development. * Basic Familiarity with microcontroller programming. * Fully comfortable and proficient using Microsoft Word, Excel. * Comfort working independently to complete needed work without strong oversight. * Strong communications and organizational skills for managing time and completing tasks. * Experience with the following a plus: * Knowledge of soldering standards, such as IPC-J-STD-001, IPC-A-600 and IPC-A-610 * Familiar with C/C++ or LabView programming Education and Experience * Associate's degree or equivalent experience in electrical engineering required. * Minimum of 2 years' experience. The Electronics Technician will be responsible for soldering Printed Circuit Boards (PCBs), and may be asked to assist in the development, testing, troubleshooting, assembly, and calibration of analog and digital circuitry for industrial instrumentation according to schematics and specifications. Responsibilities Soldering of PCBs. Assist in the development and testing of electronic circuits. Troubleshoot and resolve issues with printed circuit boards (PCBs). Assemble and calibrate analog and digital circuits. Read and interpret schematics and test plans. Identify electronic components such as diodes, resistors, and integrated circuits. Essential Skills AS Degree or EET Degree in Electronics or similar, preferred. Soldering of PCBs; ability to work under a microscope. Proficient with soldering irons and crimping tools. Ability to read schematics and test plans. Proficiency in identifying electronic components. Additional Skills & Qualifications Hands-on bench testing skills with electronic laboratory test instruments - oscilloscopes, meters, signal generators. 1+ years of experience with electronics troubleshooting on PCBs. Familiarity with digital circuitry including micro-processor busses and digital logic gates. Understanding of analog circuitry including op-amp circuits and discrete transistors. Experience in prototyping and modifying PCB circuits with through-hole and SMT components. Job Type & Location This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Princeton Junction, NJ.
