Position Summary
The Engineering Technologist II position is the second level of the non-Engineer degreed technical support role job classification. This position is part of the Protection and Control Engineering group located in the Duke Energy Engineering office in Lake Mary Florida. This work group is responsible for design of protection and control relaying applications for substations (new and existing). Design projects range from routine equipment modifications and installations to the complete design of new transmission facilities. Coordinates work to manage multiple projects simultaneously to ensure timely release of engineering designs. Utilizes a variety of tools and techniques in order to complete an engineering design, including current design specifications, pertinent code manuals, computer aided design/drafting software, and other reference sources. Final product is an engineering release package consisting of pertinent drawings and bills of material.
The person in this position will work as part of a project team to develop detailed project scopes, layouts of control equipment enclosures, detailed elementary, schematic and wiring diagram drawings and plans required for construction of specific substation projects. The work performed by this unit requires an understanding of power systems, transformers, protective relaying and electrical engineering principles. The person will be involved in the development and review of designs for high voltage substations at voltages of 23kV, 115kV, 230kV and 500kV. Additionally, the person in this position is expected to develop some knowledge in protective relay settings calculations and analysis based on current and evolving standards (IEEE, NERC, etc.). The person in this position must be able to manage multiple projects in various stages of design so as to meet project schedule deadlines; provide design support to field personnel during project implementation; develop and maintain sufficient level of expertise in use of CAD software for efficient production of engineering work; and collaborate in a team environment to spread knowledge and to produce the best quality product possible.

Minimum Education/Experience

Summary:
Operations Engineer fulfills the role of project manager for projects assigned, technical support for field operations and/or Construction management including bidding and evaluating vendor proposals. More detail below.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
* Provide engineering design and project management for assigned projects in accordance with Company, industry specifications and Federal regulations.
* Prepare project cost estimates, scopes of work, and scheduling.
* Provide direction and monitor Company and third party engineering and Cad design personnel.
* Prepare material requisitions and specifications for the purchase of material for construction projects.
* Perform technical review of vendor material quotations, engineering drawings and manufacturing specifications and procedures
* Review preliminary drawings for neatness, completeness, and accuracy, and approve the drawings for bid and construction.
* Prepare weekly reports on project activity, track project cost and schedule and report results to Management.
* Review as-built drawings for code and specification compliance
* Assist Field Operations and team personnel with engineering problems, code interpretation and questions.
* Develop Construction Bid packages and write contracts for winning bidder.
* Provides financial oversight, and revises projects to reflect changes in cost forecast exceeding approved tolerances.
* Coordinates with Specialists, Operations (Team, Managers, and Directors), Gas Control, Planning, Marketing and customers to reduce or eliminate any outages to customers.
* Maintain a working knowledge of applicable Federal Regulations, Company Engineering Standards and Standard Operating Procedures and other pipeline industry standards and specifications.
* Provide technical support for right of way permitting and acquisition including the preparation and approval of road and railroad crossing permit drawings and the preparation approval of property plats used to acquire the necessary right of way and temporary construction work space for assigned projects.
* Provide technical support for environmental permitting including the preparation and approval of wetland permit drawings, quad maps, right of way arrangement drawings and construction temporary workspace drawings.
* Analyzes outside design drawings for encroachments to FGT Facilities. Works to eliminate conflicts and provides initial scope for required relocations of FGT facilities.
Requirements:
Education and/or Experience, Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential job duty satisfactorily. The requirements for this position are listed below:
* Bachelor of Science degree in Engineering. Mechanical Engineering preferred.
* 0 - 3 years of related experience
* Expected to have knowledge of 49 CFR 192, ASME B31.8, API, and AGA. Industry experience in engineering, design and operation of natural gas transmission systems.
* Excellent working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel and MS Projects.
* Must have the ability to learn vendor sizing and selection programs for control valves, regulators, and relief valves, pipeline flow calculations, road crossing stress calculations, area of reinforcement calculations, and other engineering related programs.
* Strong interpersonal and communication skills. Excellent analytical and organizational skills
* Self-starter with the ability to work with minimal supervision. Able to handle multiple projects simultaneously in an environment of changing priorities, reporting, and regulatory requirements.
* Must be able to manage time, conflicting and changing priorities, work in a team environment and assist team members as required.
* Deals frequently with a wide range of contacts including technical, operations, risk management, contractors, vendors, attorneys, and various levels of management.
* Must have a valid US driver's license.

* Driving, walking, standing frequently.
* Exposure to adverse weather, cramped conditions and some heavy lifting
* Visits to industrial/manufacturing settings, which may include exposure to various materials and chemicals, as well as extreme temperature conditions and loud machinery, and require appropriate personal protective equipment.
* Must be able to work extended hours and/or days and to meet strict deadlines. Travel to field locations for assignments will require overnight stays (approximately 10%).
